Time and again they battled up a hill, only to hurtle headlong over an unseen ridge. All Gonangnan could do was cling to the handlebar, keep his foot on the claw brake, and pray that his runaway sled wouldn’t crush the wheel dogs under the brush bow.

Making it to Shaktoolik in one piece was looking less likely by the minute.

Togo’s instincts had served him well. Taking the shortcut across the sea ice had been the right call. Unlike Gonangnan and his team, who were traveling north, Togo and Seppala had the wind in their favor. On the downside, there was no room for error as the gale bowled them along at breakneck speed. Stopping was not an option. Disaster was only a split second away. But this was Togo’s strong suit! His brain worked as fast as his paws. Somehow he kept the sled clear of ice hazards and obstacles all the way to the small fishing camp of Ungalik on the opposite shore of Norton Bay.

Seppala gave a click that meant Good job! and another that meant Turn to the right and keep going. On they sprinted, due south over frozen tundra. Only a few more miles to Shaktoolik! There they could sit out the storm for the night, catching up on some much-needed sleep, before the last hundred-plus miles of their marathon run to Nulato.

“Next stop, Shaktoolik!” Togo sounded upbeat as he cheered on his trail-weary team, but secretly he was thinking, It can’t come soon enough! The miles were finally catching up with him. He had enjoyed the challenge of the sea-ice crossing, but all that lightning-fast decision-making had been hard work. And that was on top of aching legs, sore paws, and a nagging pain in his shoulder. “Heads up!” he barked.

And then suddenly … What was that?

A dark shape loomed out of the swirling snow.

It smelled of fear and aggression, and it was coming straight at them.
