TWENTY-EIGHT

Jagged Rock isn’t exactly the way I’d pictured it. I’d assumed it would be one big, jagged-looking rock. Instead, it’s two columns of rock that somehow leaned toward one another, as if by some kind of gravitational pull, and ended up touching. The rocks have formed into one with a large gap in the middle, tall enough for an eighteen-wheeler to ride through, and wide enough for two vehicles to pass through. It has jagged edges and sharp corners. The torches planted in the ground around the rock by the bikers illuminates it, making it appear as red as the sand of the desert.

“Oh, shit, Nova!” Olive squeals as she runs to me. She’s barefoot, with her heels in one hand, and the other pressed to her chest so her boobs don’t bounce too much in her tube top. She wraps her arms around me. “Please tell me this isn’t a fucking dream, babe,” she says, then pulls back to hold me by the upper arms. “Please tell me that I just heard Wolf claim the fuck out of you!”

I fight a laugh and shake my head. “I think he did,” I breathe. Even I can’t believe it. Yes, this was a part of the plan, but I didn’t think he’d cave. He never gave an inch before, but now he’s going as far as to race for me? Who even knew that was a thing?

“This is going to be epic!” Olive squeals again. “Funny story—all the girls are over there talking about it and admiring you now. Figures, right? Bet they all want to be you now. Hell, I want to be you!”

I smile and rake my fingers through my hair just as Empress appears. “Here.” Empress hands me a shot glass with liquid in it. “Drink this.”

“What is it?” I ask.

“Tequila.”

“Why do I need this?” I ask, frowning at the glass before picking my gaze back up to hers.

“It’ll numb you up real good.” I’m still confused and as if she senses that, she sighs and places a hand on her hip. “The way it goes is, once you’re claimed, you get the mark of the club.” She lifts her shirt up and right below her armpit, just above her rib cage, is a mark branded into her skin. It’s raised and pink and is in the shape of a crown. My heart drops when I realize it’s burned into her skin. “It means you belong to the club. For life.”

I hand the tequila back to her and some of it sloshes onto my fingers as I do. “They are not fucking branding me.”

“This is what you wanted, right?” Empress snaps. “You wanted to be claimed by him. As a claimed girl, you become property of The Lords.”

“Okay, that’s fine and all, but I’m not about to walk around with a fucking burn mark on my body!”

“It’s this way or no way. Wolf will win this race, and when he does, everyone will be waiting at the camp around a fire, waiting for him to stake his claim.
