***Pierce***

Pierce knew that Bonnie was right, knew even better than she did how much it affected her, but he was embarrassed and slightly humiliated by the entire thing. With a sigh, he sat down in the rocking chair and looked over at her. “Getting involved with those two was the stupidest thing I ever did, even dumber than leaving in the first place,” he finally said.

Bonnie reached out and took his hand. “We all make mistakes when we’re young and too stupid to know better,” she said. “What matters is how you deal with it now.”

“That’s the problem. I know the right thing to do, but I don’t want to do it,” he said, looking off into the distance. “If I wasn’t so selfish, I’d let you go, I’d drive you away so that you’d be safe, but I can’t, Bonnie. I don’t want to lose you again even if I don’t deserve you.”

She was silent for a moment. “There is so much wrong with that statement, I don’t even know where to start,” she said, shaking her head with frustration. “What makes you think you don’t deserve me?”

He shrugged. “I haven’t exactly been a model citizen. I could end up in jail for some of the things I’ve done,” he said, unable to look at her. “You shouldn’t be with someone like me. You should be with someone...better.”

“Are you done feeling sorry for yourself?” she asked. “If I didn’t know better, I would think that I’m talking to that eighteen-year-old you used to be, not the successful man who runs a ranch and a hotel.”

Surprised, he looked over at her. “I’m not feeling sorry for myself; I’m just trying to...” but even to him, the words sounded false, and he trailed off, unable to defend himself. “Okay, you might have a point, but that doesn’t change things, not really.”

“It does if you stop thinking like that lonely, abused kid you used to be,” Bonnie said. “You’re a grown man now, Pierce; you have friends who care about you, friends who would be there for you if you just ask, and you have me. Did it ever occur to you that driving me away would be the worst thing you could do?”

“But then you would be safe,” he said.

“I have to admit that I don’t like the fact that you keep talking about my safety,” she said, studying him for a second before she continued. “I’m assuming there’s a good reason for that, but even though it scares me, I’m not going anywhere. I’m not going to run from these people.”

He shook his head, fear making it hard to talk for a second. “You don’t know what you’re talking about; you don’t know what these people are capable of. If something happened to you because of me, I would never be able to forgive myself. I would rather live my life without you knowing that you were safe out there somewhere than—”

“You know that if you let them win this time, they’ll be back,” Bonnie interrupted.
