CHAPTER FOURTEEN

Ah…there was the open sky. I inhaled deeply, taking it all in. If someone had asked, I didn’t know that I’d be able to tell them the last time I’d seen it without something obstructing my view. The softest shimmer of the bright stars that would fill the night sky were starting to emerge through the deep purple and orange streaked sky. Crickets chirped, and bullfrogs sang their rough melody.

I had been brought to a massive glen. The last remnants of sunlight broke through the thick trees, highlighting a settlement of homes that intertwined themselves in the trunks and climbed partly upward. Smoke from chimneys rose through the air, reaching toward the clouds, and a warm, easy breeze blew along my face.

This is where the shifters had been hiding all these years. My uncle had searched the land for days, desperate to burn the mongrel dogs, as he put it, to the ground. But they’d buried themselves within the forest and shielded themselves with this ancient magic. It was as if their homes had sprung out of the earth and they’d become a part of the forest.

“Welcome to Avalon, Ms. Montgomery. A caster such as yourself hasn’t walked on this land in centuries. You know I have a lot of questions,” Jensen said, smiling brilliantly. The light in his eyes somehow mimicked the sun’s golden bright rays.

“I’m sure you do.” And I wasn’t sure how much I should reveal to him. Walking beside him through the stunning town tucked away in the woods had put me at ease. The tension in my shoulders relaxed, though the back of my mind was constantly on alert. I could not afford to relax too much.

Being away from Barrick and Clay was near torture, and like the slayers, these lycans were still a mage’s sworn enemies.

“I understand you need some help, and well, I think we might be able to aid one another. I haven’t spoken to a witch in quite a while.” He cocked his head. The length of his auburn hair fell to the side as he studied me. “Though I have to say, I don’t remember them being as lovely as you are. I understand why your vampire pet is so protective of you.”

My cheeks became slightly red, and my eyes flickered to the ground. Barrick was just being Barrick. It wasn’t anything like that...right?

“Oh, well, you know.”

“Don’t be shy,” he laughed, opening a massive oak door painted red with brass handles, which led into one giant tree at the center of the glen. “My people are not stuffy like those mages. We are real and enjoy ourselves.”

Before I could respond, I was met with a stunning grand hall. Tall trees stood for arches that bent up and held up the inner stone roof. It smelled of pine and the smoke of bonfires. Men in form-fitting leather and women in elegant cotton dresses walked past in conversations. They all wore their hair long and in various braids, some loose, others with up to ten braids creating patterns.
