Getrag 260 codes:
There are two units here, the 260/5 and the 260/6. The latter was used on the 3.5 litre cars and a handful of 528i’s.
525i and 528i = NF, NS, TAJE, NG, NR
535i and M535i = TJD
E34 530i and 535i = AJE, TAJE
MAINTENANCE AND REPAIRS
Rebuilding a gearbox is a job for a gearbox rebuild-er with all the big presses to get it apart. Unless you have a 265, then you’re better off replacing a worn out manual box with a good used one. Converting a rare four speed to a five speed is always a good idea - you will need the gearbox complete with linkage and the shorter propshaft.
Leaking oil seals are a pain to replace. The top one for the gearshift linkage is far, far easier up on a ramp and a horrid job on the ground grovelling around with the car on axle stands. It involves dropping the prop-shaft down with the rubber donut (Guibo) and whilst you are there, it would be mad not to renew the gear-inkage joint as well. Make sure that when you do, you also order from your BMW dealer both the plastic thrust washers and a couple of metal C clips as they ust love to ping off and vanish into thin air.
The other oil seal is the output shaft. You will need a suitably big socket to undo the nut once the prop has been dropped down and another socket to drift the new seal in.
As for maintenance, changing the oil should be done every 30,000 miles. The correct oil is EP80, and rattly or noisy gearboxes will take EP90. Really growly units might respond to EP140 but the gearchange will be very hard work and at that stage you’re better off with another gearbox. ATF (automatic transmission fluid) is too thin for these units and will cause lay shaft rattle.
