Despite the night ending in exhaustion, I still feel like the date before the hospital was going really well. When we returned to the house, I kissed her at her bedroom door and then went to my bedroom.

My body is exhausted, but my mind is running a mile a minute. A light tap on my door startles me and also excites me as I know who is on the other end of the door. I lean up on my elbows and tell her to come in.

Summer pokes her head in and smiles, “I can’t sleep,” she whispers.

I move from the center of my bed to allow space for her and pat the space beside me. She comes in and settles in beside me. My arm goes around her and she leans her cheek on my chest.

“Tonight was… interesting,” she says.

“Tell about it, I’m sorry again that our date got interrupted.”

“Stop apologizing for that. When there are other responsibilities in one’s life, sometimes those kinds of things take precedence. I love Mason, and I know that he means the world to you,” she says.

“I just don’t want you to feel like you aren’t important too, because Summer, you are very important to me,” I reply.

“Your son will always come first, I know that.”

“While in some ways, that’s true. I think that in other ways we would as well. I want to have a relationship that I can show my son is strong, I want to set an example for that. I want him to be in a loving home, and to see what it’s like to love someone for real, it’s kinda like I’d be setting him up to be an amazing adult.”

“Mason has you as a dad, I think that’s a good start,” she puts her chin on me and looks up at me.

“Summer?” I begin.

“Yeah, Shaw?”

“Thank you so much for being so strong for me tonight, I don’t think I allowed myself to really feel what was happening, but you holding my hand, and sticking up for me to that nurse may have seemed insignificant to you, but to me—well, just thank you.”

“Shaw, even if we were still just friends, I would have done the same.”

“I know, I don’t know why, but it seems like maybe now that we’re taking this a level further, that it’s different, it takes on a whole different meaning, even though, it doesn’t.”

“We should quit trying to analyze this,” she whispers.

“I agree.”

“Shaw?” she says resting her cheek on my chest again. “Thank you for making sure that I was included tonight.”
