Brenda was still flushed when she walked up the steps into the main sanctuary. A red, sexual flush, called the Necklace of Venus, was still visible around her neck. Her body still glistened with a thin layer of sweat. Dust and desire still clung to her skin. She stood for a moment facing the altar, trying to control her rapid breath and waiting for Jess to step up as well. It was like stepping into a new world.

They didn’t need to know all about the First Amendment, civil procedure or the precise logarithms of their career trajectory. Their journey began in irony and ended in intimacy.

“Let’s go,” she said. “We’ve already prayed. And we have our answers.”
