“I know the first contact: Jonathan Spivet,” Warrick said. He could even picture the man—tall and thin in an expensive, dark suit. He was a careful man. Educated. He’d been invited to work for the Bloodkin Assembly, but had gotten a better offer from the Heolstors, Bloodkin Bronze. The Heolstors had been long-time allies of Voclain. “I’m not worried about his offer. In fact—” yes, it made sense “—this may be an indirect show of support.”

Samantha’s eyebrows went up. “A friend at last. And Alinari? Is she being hostile?”

“It’s a challenge on her part.” What a spoiled brat. “I think she didn’t like what I said to her yesterday, and she’s decided to irritate me by getting to you a different way.”

“Would she hurt anyone?”

His vision darkened, and Samantha went blurry gold before him. Her promise to her partner that she’d make it right…. He was so damn angry. Teeth-and-claws-and-fire angry. He’d never seen the kind of dismay and horror in Samantha’s gaze that bloomed there now.

“If she does…” he began. He’d made a promise, too.

“You’ll kill her. That’s what you said before.”

Samantha’s innocent and helpless human friends were caught up in Bloodkin machinations.

“Yes. I want to kill Miranda now.” The longing for violence thick and sweet. “I’ve wanted to kill her since you told me about her spy tampering with my stuff.”

He’d been acting. He was always acting.

“Practice. Control.” He looked down at the floor for a moment. “You said something to your partner a moment ago—that Voclain was among the most powerful—but I don’t think you realize how true that is.”

“I do know. I grew up in your house.” Samantha, defensive.

“No.” God, this was painful, but he wanted her to understand. He needed her to understand.

“You’ve had these fantasies all your life,” he said, looking for the right way to explain.

“My head in the clouds.” She sounded embarrassed and exasperated. “My feet are on the ground now.”

“Just listen!” he commanded.

He heard her swallow hard.

He pushed the heat back down, and he corrected himself. “Please, listen.”

And dammit, now she was holding her breath, but like a Vine, she stood and waited for what her dragon master had to say.

It was all wrong. He wasn’t her master. He didn’t want to be.

“You’ve had fantasies,” he told her. “I like them. They are full of light and hope.” And pieces of her soul. “But most of my life I’ve had fears.”

She took a shallow breath, almost silent.

“But those fears don’t include the other Bloodkin,” he said. “Not even Xanthippe.”

The oldest Bloodkin of them all couldn’t scare him.

“I have absolutely no doubt that I will prevail,” he went on. “I hope it’s through strategy. I pray it’s through a careful choice of words.”

Puzzles for him to solve to distract himself. Always distracting himself.

“Because if I have to use force, I will win.”

He could almost scent the tangy blood. The monster inside writhed to get out. That deep ache—the one that felt so good, like the crest of exquisite pleasure—pulsed in his bones. He needed to shift and fly.
