Talbot nodded and faced Mel again. “He was magic to me. Irresistible, I guess. I never wanted to be without him, but before I knew it—”

“It was time to move again.”

“But this time, I said no. I was eighteen, ready for college, and Powell had become my family. I mean, my aunt and uncle were good people, but they’d never wanted kids.

My parents had left me some money, but I couldn’t access it until I was twenty-one, so they signed the paperwork letting me have it early, set me up in an apartment, and… they left.”

“Sounds lonely.”

“Not with Powell and his family. I ate dinner at their house most nights, spent Christmas with them, celebrated birthdays. I worked, went to school, graduated, and went to college. Powell and I got an apartment off campus and played house for three years. We talked about getting a bigger place together after graduation, the two of us having a life, ya know?” He glanced at Mel, who nodded and sipped his drink.

“It’s not like that closet has a revolving door.”

“Right. It was hard on him, lonely. For years he put his life and… integrity on hold, waiting for me to grow a pair. A little more than three years ago, Po started being honest about himself, and I started creating distance. I came home less and less, kept canceling on him, drinking too much, which isn’t tough for me.” When Mel raised an eyebrow, Talbot said, “Lightweight here.”

“So…,” Mel prompted after they sat silently for a few moments.

“So… he found me in bed with some woman.”

“You cheated on him?”

“I’d been cheating on him for years!” Talbot glanced around as a couple of heads turned their way. He lowered his voice and continued. “No, I didn’t cheat. Sex would have been a miracle, but he needed to move forward with his life, the life he wanted… the one I couldn’t give him. That incident gave me the opportunity to… set him free.”

Mel was silent, absorbing that information. “Before
