JOHNNY

Tahlia looked like she was about to pass out or throw up as Fox talked about eating barbecue right after our massacre. She dealt with dead bodies all the time, but that wasn’t the same as being part of the chase and assault. When she swayed on her feet, I grabbed her by the arm to steady her. She was losing it.

“We should…” She pressed her hand to her head as she closed her eyes. She was struggling to regain control. “This is insane!” she shouted. “Your boss set me up twice! I just destroyed evidence and blew up a building!”

“Nicely done,” Fox grinned.

I shot him a glare, smacking him upside the head.

“Ow! I was just pointing out how badass that was.”

“Not now,” I hissed.

“We were in a car chase,” she rambled, losing it quickly. “I sang some weird song with Fox as you shot at police. Police, Johnny! You’ll go to prison if you’re caught! I’ll never see you again!”

I grabbed her by the shoulders and shook her slightly. Fucking her wouldn’t work to calm her down right now. There were too many people around, and we had the small problem of being on the run from the police. We needed to get back on American soil.

“Tahlia! It’s going to be okay.”

“I don’t know,” Fox snorted. “She has a point. That’s a felony. We could all end up in prison with a burly guy named Bubba. Or woman, sorry for the mistake,” he winked at her.

I spun around and punched him in the face, hoping he would get the point and shut the fuck up. He gripped his jaw, looking like a kicked puppy as he looked at me.

“Harsh, man.”

“Shut the fuck up.”

“Not that this hasn’t been a blast,” Jason interrupted, “but we need to get the fuck out of here.”

“And ditch the car,” I sighed, rubbing at my eyes. “RCMP will have already called it in. We’d be better off on foot. We can lose them in the trees.”

“Grab anything from the car you need. We’ll have to wipe it down before we go,” Jason nodded.

I pulled Tahlia aside and pushed her down on the side of the road. “Just stay here for a few minutes, okay?”

She nodded, but she was staring at the bodies we left behind. She was fucking terrified of what was coming. I knelt in front of her, grabbing her jaw in my hand. When she still didn’t look at me, I crushed my mouth to hers in a bruising kiss. Finally, after a few seconds, I felt her body give under mine. She wrapped her arms around my neck and melted into my chest.

“Better?” I asked.

She leaned her forehead against mine and nodded. “Sorry.”

“It’s okay. Don’t lose it on me now. We still have a ways to go.”

“I’m good.”

I kissed her again and stood. “Stay here.”

When I was sure she wasn’t going to lose it, I hurried over to the car and helped Jason wipe it down. The last thing we needed was our prints in their system.
