CHAPTER 6

His mind went into overdrive at her softly whispered question. On the one hand, he wanted to scream yes. On the second, he would not risk hurting her should his palms prove sweaty.

“Here,” she said, smiling up at him and holding her hand out.

Inside was a tiny spiderling.

Duh.

Griff cursed himself ten times a fool. But he managed to smile and nodding at her small charge.

Of course, she’d meant the baby weavers.

Not her breasts, you fucking moron.

Grrr.

“I don’t want to hurt them,” he said.

His pulse was still racing. Griff was furious with himself, angry at his own damned skin. He was a fucking abomination. Unable to touch anything without bringing harm.

“Here,” she turned, and pulled something out of her pocket.

It was one of the swatches from earlier. Arachne laid it in his palm and with great care, transferred some of the tiny spiders to his hand. Both stunned and thrilled that she trusted him, he allowed it.

“I made this for a gladiator many years ago,” she explained. “He was to fight a six-headed hydra, the venom spitting kind. I am moderating the weave for you, but in the meantime, if you place your hand inside the tank with this draped over, you can hold them.”

Griff had held his breath the entire time Arachne draped the gossamer thin fabric swatch over his hand. He didn’t trust himself not to lunge if he breathed in anymore of her amazing scent. She gestured to the tank, and he went. Unable to hide his joy, he grinned and lowered his appendage into the enormous habitat. Griffin barked a short laugh as dozens of the tiny creatures climbed gently into his palm.

“They are so tiny, and their legs tickle!”

Smiling so hard, he thought his face was going to crack, Griff glanced up to see her watching him. She looked down, and he had to question whether or not he’d really seen what he’d thought. Doubtful, but there was nothing he could do about that tiny whisper of hope that rose within him. He couldn’t help himself.

Arachne was grinning then too, and she was so damn beautiful he gasped.

“Aren’t they amazing?” she asked, mistaking the sound for having something to do with the cute spiderlings.

Sure, they were fun and cool.

But Arachne?

Fuck.

The female was in a category all her own. With her starlight colored hair and moonbeam eyes. She was poetry in motion, filling him with dreams he’d never had before. She sent his heart pounding and his pulse racing. Griff had to work to control his natural response to her. The last thing he wanted to do was to break out in a sweat.

Grrr.

“Amazing,” he echoed her earlier sentiment.

Griffin swallowed and tried once more to rein in the thundering of his heart. She was amazing, alright. Amazing and beautiful, and far out of reach for the likes of him. She turned her palm upside down and back again, giggling at the tiny creatures racing about over her skin.

She moved so that her hand was touching the side of his, the thin fabric swatch he held separated her skin from his.
