CHAPTER TWENTY-NINE

The entrance to the subterranean structure opened before them, revealing wide steps tapering down to a narrow doorway in the very earth. Corpses in all manner of decay littered the steps down into the darkness. Some of these he’d killed last time he’d been trapped here. Dried blood and sand coated every surface.

“You want to go down there?” Raine stared down at the pitch-black entrance, then glanced back over her shoulder at the whipping sand, flashes of lightning zagging across the sky, her expression troubled.

“Creatures avoid the labyrinth.” For good reason.

She looked unconvinced, her eyes flicking over him before she lifted her chin haughtily, that aloof attitude covering her unease. Brave vampire, keeping him on his toes.

“Onward, then.” She started picking her way down the wide steps. He couldn’t take his eyes off her, admiring her determined spirit. She was changing everything he knew about himself.

He froze at the top of the stairs, another rumble trembling below his boots. Something was approaching, and his stomach clenched in dread.

“Get down into the passage. Now!” he yelled just as the thing he feared exploded up out of the earth, a spray of sand and chunks of rock raining down on them. The bulbous head of a pasty-white Burrower broke through the sand, rows of serrated teeth bared as its thick, snake-like body undulated upwards, swaying as more of its body emerged from the hole.

With speed and accuracy, it struck, hissing as its huge head came towards him.

He leapt out of the way just as a portion of the steps exploded into dust on impact. His sword clattered down towards Raine, leaving him vulnerable. A glint of metal caught his attention. One of the corpses held onto a dusty, round shield. He reached out, the half-skeletal fingers breaking as he yanked the aegis free.

Just as he pulled the shield upwards, the snake struck again, the metal cracking under the force of the blow. Another brutal blow vibrated through his arms as he slid backwards down the steps, the heavy strike almost breaking his protection this time, his bones shuddering.

He searched the corpses closest to him for another sword, or anything, but there was nothing.

Out of the corner of his eye, he saw Raine pluck a rotting spear from one of the corpses at the base of the stairs, pulling her arm back only to launch the weapon like a javelin.

The next hissing screech from the beast broke off in an unintelligible gurgling sound. Korban lowered the shield, his lips parting in surprise as he watched the writhing beast, blood spilling from its wide mouth. The spear had hit its mark, lodging into the back of the Burrower’s throat.

Raine tossed his sword to him. He snagged it as he got to his feet, dropping the broken shield to finish the creature off with a quick beheading. The twitching body sank back to the ground as its head thumped down into the puddle of its viscous blood.

“Where’d you learn to throw like that?” he asked, flexing his throbbing hand and arm as he descended the steps towards her.
