Chapter Eleven

I was a thief. A big one. From the library of all places. And this wasn’t the first time. Probably wouldn’t be the last.

The yearbook I had showed Callum was tucked into my bag between notebooks. He and I parted ways after I stopped crying, but he said he wanted to see me that night to make sure I was okay. Plus, he would see me at dinner.

With my arms crossed over my chest, I rushed across campus to get to my dorm room. My face was a splotchy red mess from all the crying, and I wanted to clean up a bit. I raced through the corridors at top speed.

“Whoa! I’m going to start getting offended if you keep running into me like this.”

Nixon. I would know that voice anywhere.

“I…you got in my way. Here I was, minding my own business and bam…there’s a boulder around the corner.”

Did I just call my mate a boulder?

Maybe.

Yes.

His dark-brown eyebrows furrowed before he laughed and grabbed me up like I was a toddler who weighed nothing. Did all of these guys like to pick up their mates? “Did you just call me a boulder, Gwen?”

I tried to wriggle free, laughing, but nothing was happening. Nixon had a vise grip. “Yes. No. Maybe. I mean, look at you. You’re…maybe you’re the one who keeps running into me.”

Over Nixon’s and my laughter, I heard the chattering, whispering, always present. “Hold onto me, mate. Let’s get out of here.”

I didn’t even ask where he was bringing me. Anywhere out of sight of the gossipers would be nice. But as I wrapped my arms around Nixon’s neck, I saw he was headed into the direction of my dorm room.

Just the thought had my thighs and stomach pulling taut.

“Are you going to my room?” I asked, my voice catching.

“Is that okay? That’s where I was coming from when you ran into the rock.”

I giggled. “Boulder. Okay, why were you at my dorm room?”

When we got to the room, he splayed one of his hands across my back and the other opened the door with the keys I handed him. “Because I wanted to see my mate. That’s why.”

It would take some time for me to get used to hearing three men call me mate. Not just any three men either…the most handsome, eligible men in the school.

To me, they were the most gorgeous men in the entire world.

“That’s going to take some getting used to,” I murmured as he put me down. “I wonder where Astra is?”

Nixon rolled his bottom lip between his teeth. “I saw her going to the other side of campus, which was why I thought I could catch you…hopefully alone.”

The way he said alone made every erogenous zone in my entire body throb with lust. “Why alone?”

A low rumble came from his chest. I knew wolf shifters did this, but to hear it come from him, well, I knew now why the females fawned and sighed when males made the sound in books.
