5.5.1 Word order14

It will have emerged from the range of sentences quoted above that, apart from some initial particles which are the subject of 5.5.2, the usual order of constituents in both modern colloquial and literary Welsh is verb + subject + object (VSO), e.g.:

Collodd Ieuan y llyfr lost I. the book 'I. lost the book'

Even if the semantic load of the verb does not appear until later in the sentence in the form of a verbal noun, the tense and person markers are carried by a verbal element in initial position, e.g.:

Mae Mair yn mynd i 'r pentre is M. in go to the village 'M. is going/goes to the village'
