~CHAPTER TWENTY~

Inside the haus, Rachael found Mamm scrubbing a pot with a lot of elbow grease. Dishes sounded gut, a distraction from memory of Elijah and his wild, hurtful ways. “Mamm, may I help you.”

“She looked up, smiled, but she had that look of when something was on her mind, an uneasiness Rachael knew all too well. “Sure, go ahead and crumble that cornbread for cornbread salad.” She looked back down at the pan, scrubbed away. “It will be something quick to eat.”

“Is Grossmammi resting?” Lord knew the woman had to be brokenhearted to lose such a wunderbar husband. How sad. She’d need everyone’s support to make it through this difficult time. “Praying for her.”

Mamm finished the pot, lifted it out of the suds and into the rinse water before handing it to Rachael and nodding towards the drying towel on the counter. “Please dry, and then you can fix the salad.” She grabbed another pot, dunked it into the water. “Your daed’s taking it very hard, and I can see why.” Worry entered her face. “He was wondering–Elijah Yoder–what exactly is your relationship with him?”

Rachael’s head hurt, but she would explain about their spat. “He betrayed me, Mamm.”

Mamm nodded, her tone low, “I thought so. He’s not the same Elijah Grossdaedi fell in love with, friended, is he?”

Secrets. Multiple women. Love of alcohol. Where could Rachael start, and could Mamm handle the truth? She scanned Mamm’s concerned face, her lines of wrinkles depicting a woman with great wisdom and great experience in life. “Ever been in love with someone so much that they take your breath away?”

Mamm grinned. “Your daed.”

That didn’t help since Daed hadn’t betrayed her. “What about other menner you privately courted or sparked an interest in? Someone who seemed chite, but later appeared unfit?” Embarrassment ran down Rachael’s spine. Asking Mamm such personal questions had to make her feel awkward. But Rachael needed to go deeper.

Into another woman’s heart, to see how she handled such hurt, despair. Truth be told, Rachael wanted to run away, sit in a cave, and pretend the triplets weren’t coming, but she couldn’t. She had to find a way to cope.

“No, I never dated anyone who left the Order.” Mamm gazed at her dochder with that warm smile, one that always comforted. “When we stray away from Gott’s plans, we create mountains that we can’t climb. Only Gott can move those mountains, but we must repent.”

“I repent for the having the triplets.” Rachael purposely looked away from Mamm in fear of her look of shock. “Social Services is bringing my triplets anytime now. Elijah lied about me having three babies.” She lowered her head. ‘I thought I only had one kinner.”

“You must leave then because you are a Mamm, need to have your own place and provide for your own kinner.” Mamm tapped her shoulder. “Go, now is not a time to put this on our family. Grossmammi’s heart is bad, and she can’t take such bad news. You have money saved in the bank, so go get it out and get you and your girls a place.
