Chapter 6

“Yeah. I know. Want me to run down to the lab for her results?”

“Could you? The sooner we know, the sooner we can start treatments. I’ll wait for her parents.”

Carrie ran down three flights of stairs. Arriving at the lab, she took a deep breath and walked in. “Hey, Jon. Have you gotten any labs for a Margarete King? Pediatric leukemia patient?”

“Sure did. I was about to call up there. Hate to say it, but her leukemia is back in a huge way.”

“Awww, man! I was hoping something else had made her sick this morning. Let me take them upstairs and I’ll show them to Castillo and put them into her chart.”

“You saved me a trip. Thanks.” He handed several sheets of paper printed with numbers and a graph.

Carrie glanced through them, seeing that the lab results verified everything Jon had said. Now, it was Carrie that muttered a profanity under her breath. “Here we go again. Poor girl.” Upstairs, she secured the lab work into Margarete’s chart and slipped it back into its spot. Seeing Andrew in the lounge talking to the Kings, she sighed. “Good morning.”

Sammy and Leora gave small smiles to the nurse. “Morning. Denki for taking such gut care of her.”

Carrie felt her gut clenching, wishing that their “gut” care of her had not resulted in a return of her leukemia.

“Now, this happens more often than it doesn’t. Obviously, all of us were hoping and praying that Margarete would be one of the fortunate few who stayed in remission. We still have the chemo treatments and have a shot at getting her back into remission.”

“Will it work this time around?” Sammy felt sick with fear for Margarete.

“We can introduce a different medication to her regimen. She’d be getting three chemo medications, plus the steroids. She’ll have to stay in the hospital for a few more weeks until she’s able to withstand the effects of these medications—she’ll feel them more.”

“You mean the nausea and vomiting, right?” Leora knew the answer before Andrew even nodded.

“Exactly. Missus King, don’t blame yourself. All of us have done everything that we should have done. Circumstances...and God...dictated otherwise. And we just have to deal with it.”

“Ya, I know. I’m not blaming anyone. I’m just sad because she’s wanted so badly to get well.”

“Would you like to see her? We’re going to determine this morning if she’s recovered enough from the flu to start chemo again.”

“Please. I’m so worried about her!” In Margarete’s room, Leora stifled a gasp of dismay—her daughter looked so pale and worn out! Just the day before, she had looked as though she was regaining some of her energy. “Daughter, how do you feel?”

“Horrible, Mamm. I’m so sorry!”

“For what? You couldn’t help this! We all did everything we needed to do to get you healthy again. Gott has other plans for you.”

“I know, Daed, but I really wanted to be healthy again. I want to be able to do everything I can for Mamm, her bakery and our family!” Worn out and tired of being sick, Margarete began to sob.
