Maize looked at her husband in disbelief. “You can’t seriously expect me to believe that sweet Mr. Drummond is going to spank his wife? Why, they’re old!” Maize exclaimed.

“He is a man and she is his wife. She just embarrassed him by barging in on us that way. Oh yes, he is going to tan her hide.”

“You condone that?” Maize asked in disbelief.

“Maize, sweetheart, I can promise you that even if we are in our eighties and you behave that disrespectfully toward me in front of others, I will set your sweet ass on fire the moment I get you alone.” He grinned when her eyes went wide as could be. “Let’s decide what we want to eat, honey. And, just for the record, the things you said about me and to me in front of Mr. Drummond made me real proud. Thank you.”

“I was serious and I meant what I said.”

“That is why I find you so precious,” he said, his eyes sincere.

“Horace, I was worried when you didn’t come home on time for lunch. I was sure you’d had another heart attack!” Ada explained, hoping he would forgive her and give up on the ridiculous idea of spanking her at her age. She was sixty-three, for goodness sake!

“That doesn’t excuse the deplorable way you treated me in front of clients, or the fact that you didn’t even express regret to that child over losing her father in such a tragic way. You are going to get a spanking, Ada, and what remains to be decided is how many extras with my belt you are going to earn. You are now at thirty.”

“No! Oh no, Horace! You’ve never given me thirty extra. Never!” she pleaded with him as she lowered her undergarment and pulled up her skirts and bent over his desk. “Oh, please lock the door, Horace! I couldn’t bear for Abner to come in and see me like this!”

“It would be no more than you deserve, wife. You treat that boy like he is your personal lackey, when he is my assistant, and close to having his law degree!”

“But—”

“No more buts, wife. That stops today, too.” Horace took up his ruler and gave her upturned rump a hearty whack.

“Oh, please, Horace! Not so hard! It’s been years since you’ve done this!” she reminded him.

“I haven’t forgotten how to give a good spanking, Ada, believe me.” He gave her two cracks with the ruler as if to prove he was serious. After all, he loved her.
