Ben ducked the incoming fireball, feeling the heat singe the hairs on the back of his neck. The fireball hit the frozen lobby wall behind him with a quiet sizzle. It steamed, melting through in a soccer ball-sized circle.

Keeping his eye on the furious dragon shifter, Ben could hear the line of unhappy guests grumbling to each other across the lobby.

Ben's inner bear roared and clawed inside of him, trying to protect his den from the guest's attack, but Ben pushed the beast down. Customer service means no mauling, Ben thought with a forced smile on his face.

“We asked for a balcony and you put us in the basement!” The dragon-shifter roared, half-shifted to beast form with long horns coming out of the back of his head and a tail swooping at his feet.

"Yes, we'll get that fixed right away," Ben said, making sure his smile was firmly affixed as he changed the reservation.

Ben pulled at his hair. Everything was a mess. The werewolves were roomed right next to the tiger shifters (always a recipe for trouble), the leprechauns didn’t have a mini bar, and the daycare center had mistaken kelpies for children and had forced them to stay to learn about shapes and colors. Earlier, Ned burst into tears in front of an entire lobby of guests when a sphinx came in screaming the Wi-Fi wasn't working.

“Does ANYBODY know where Sally keeps her list?” Ned's desperation-filled voice came through the headset for what must have been the tenth time in the last hour. “Anyone see her tablet?”

"Keep it together, kid," Ben said over his headset back to Ned. "Just remember what I told you."

The pause took a little too long. "I know, sir. There's no crying in hospitality."

"That's right." Ben switched off his headset as the next guest in line came forward. He tried to keep his smile looking polite as he looked at the goblin’s scowling face, but Ben knew his hate was all too apparent in his eyes. Ben’s knuckles cracked from clenching his fists so tight.

“Someone broke into our room!” The goblin standing before him was so short he could barely see over the countertop. The murderous scum slammed a piece of newspaper onto the counter with a gnarled, green fist. A large, ash-covered footprint covered the back.

“Proof of your treachery!” The tiny goblin looked so upset, his green skin was turning slightly orange. He wildly waved his wart-covered arms around. “This is an inn of LIES! This is a hotel of PERFIDY!” Even as he shouted, the goblin's eyes swiveled around, gauging the reactions of the other guests.

Ben stifled the urge to roll his eyes at the goblins' blatant attempt to cause a ruckus. Luckily, from the bored expressions on his guests’ faces, it looked like no one else in hearing range was buying the goblin's story. Everybody knew goblins liked two things, money and other goblins. They were infamous for constantly complaining about some imagined customer service slight or another, vying for refunds or free upgrades.
