CHAPTER 11

MASON

They went back to work after sex, but Mason couldn’t get it out of his mind.

He’d been with women before, most of them humans from his and his brothers’ trips into town back before they were on the run. As an alpha, his pull towards women worked even on humans, and neither he nor his brothers had had problems getting what they wanted.

But with Jamie...it was different, different in a way that almost put him ill at ease. And more than that, he’d lost control.

And that was the part that scared him the most.

He was a man used to being in control—it was what was expected of alphas. But around Jamie, he couldn’t resist, he couldn’t stop staring at her sexy-as-fuck body, her gorgeous face. He’d hoped that fucking her would’ve been enough to calm the fire burning inside of him, but the effect was the exact opposite.

It only made him want her more.

He tried to lose himself in the work on the resort, shifting his sexual energy into clearing the lawn and bringing the place back up to snuff. But every now and then, he’d catch sight of her out of the corner of his eye or smell her intoxicating omega scent on the wind.

It was only a matter of time before he gave in, he knew. And he had to put some distance between them. Things were already complicated enough without adding that onto it all.

Around two in the afternoon, Jamie stepped over to Mason. After the fun they’d had earlier, they both realized that they were going to need new clothes.

Luckily, when people had fled the resort back in the day, most of them appeared to have only taken what they could carry in one trip. Entire suitcases full of clothes were in nearly every room, zipped up and protected from the elements. An hour or so of searching got them everything they needed.

Jamie was dressed in a pair of short-shorts and a T-shirt, the hem balled up enough to show off her midriff. She was so fucking sexy, he wanted to scream, and he had no idea if she was dressed like that to tease him or what.

“Place is looking pretty good,” said Jamie, putting her hands on her wide, luscious hips. “But when are your brothers going to get here to help?”

“Why?” he asked with a grin. “Work wearing you down?”

She grinned right back. “More thinking about when they’re going to start pulling their weight.”

“Good call. The plan was for them to start heading here a day after we left, so their asses should be showing up before nightfall.”

As he said the words, he felt a tinge of...something he couldn’t quite explain. He considered it for a moment, wondering if it meant he wasn’t looking forward to not having her all to himself.

But he put it out of his mind, turning back to his work and trying not to keep getting distracted by Jamie.

When they broke for a late lunch, the two of them sat on the porch eating some canned meat along with fresh coffee, looking out over their work.
