“’Tis a flesh wound!” she said.

Genesis loved it when he took charge of things. It would take a look to pry it out of her, but it was one of the things that turned on the usual dominant heart and mind of Genesis Sawyer. A man who could boss her around in bed, even now and then, when she stepped out of line.

She wondered what kind of alpha he would be if he were a shifter, and the thought made her entire body tremble.

Saxon was smiling but took her wrist urgently.

“Let’s get out of here, babe. We need to regroup.”

God, don’t stop ever calling me that.

He led her out the back and through a long alleyway outside the parlor. There was a chance that Pierce could have come after them, but the man had been mighty weepy. She hoped that the force of her claws had been enough to deter him.

They stopped running at the center of an alleyway behind the laser tag shop. They bent over, panting, and even laughing a little.

“We’re such a good team, babe,” Saxon huffed.

She wanted to tell him how much that word made her shake, but she cast it aside, telling herself to stick to the damn mission. All of these emotions were too much to regard just yet.

“How do we get to Donnelly?” Genesis asked, leaning against the wall of the street. “I’m assuming that he’ll keep putting out hits until he finds you, so we need to get to him first.”

Abruptly, Saxon grabbed Genesis by her forearms and pulled her in for a deep, passionate kiss. It threw her off, but soon enough, she melted into it. All that remained was them, their warm lips, and the night air that was brushing through her hair.

When they parted, his eyes were shining. She smiled back, at a loss for words for one of the few times in her life.

“I think I like you,” he whispered.

Genesis felt the bloom of a blush in her cheeks, and she tried to look away, but his eyes were like magnets. He didn’t let her linger, though, and soon enough took her by the wrist again.

“Let’s get to a cafe and get some privacy. I’ve got a few palms to grease.”

They went to a 24-hour cafe on the other side of town and settled into a booth at the back of the restaurant. They ordered coffee and a small meal. Genesis didn’t realize how hungry she was until she caught a whiff of pancakes and bacon.

She saw red and started scarfing the food down while Saxon made a few phone calls. Eventually, once she got a few bits of food in her, she was able to hear Saxon talking to a few people he connected to through his reporting.

He grinned the entire time, nodding and schmoozing whoever was on the other line. He placed the phone down on leaned on the table, his smile beaming under the fluorescence.

Genesis had a mouthful of food and stopped chewing as he stared at her.
