Chapter 11

***Alix***

“Alix?”

I glanced away from the detective to see Declan in the doorway. I didn’t care if we barely knew one another; I didn’t care what anyone thought. The instant I saw him, I was out of the chair and into his arms. Declan held me tight, his strong hand running down my head to my back, his heart thudding loud in my ears.

I couldn’t speak. I did nothing except breathe in the masculine scent of him, listen to his voice tell me everything would be all right, and find comfort in his presence, in his strength. I didn’t care that Detective Harrelson watched.

I just breathed and felt glad I was still alive.

Declan gently disentangled me from his arms yet held my hand as he guided me back to the chair. I caught Harrelson’s speculative glance, then watched him stand to shake Declan’s hand.

“Detective Harrelson.”

“Declan Montague. Alix here is my friend.”

“So I see. I’m almost finished here, then you can take her home.”

“May I ask what happened?”

Harrelson glanced at me, then shrugged. “Her ex chased Ms. Scott in a pickup. She accelerated to escape him, but he continued to pursue. She called nine-one-one, giving her location. Our police officers arrived, only to have him drive away. The officers gave pursuit, yet he pulled some clever move and lost them.”

“You can add another crime to his activities today, Detective,” Declan commented. “He fired a shot at me less than an hour ago.”

I sat up straight. “He what?”

Declan squeezed my hand. “I left my office to come find Alix when I couldn’t get a hold of her. Danny took a pot shot at me, then yelled it was a warning. I was to stay out of his business.”

“And then what?”

“I ran at him, and he drove away. I knew I couldn’t get to my truck in time to catch him. I went to find Alix at her work, only to be told she hadn’t shown.”

Harrelson took notes as Declan spoke. He asked a few questions, which Declan answered, yet I got the feeling he held something back. My nerves calmer with his presence beside me, his hand in mine, I studied his profile. His lips had tightened, his eyes darkened with restrained anger, yet he spoke with a calm that didn’t match his mood.

“And if I send a Crime Scene unit to your office, they’ll find traces of a shooting?” Harrelson asked.

“And the bullet in the brick wall.”

The detective made notes as Declan turned his head to look me in the eye. I knew there was something he needed to talk to me about, yet couldn’t. Not then. While I didn’t understand why that was, I trusted him enough to wait.

“What are your plans for dealing with this guy?”

I whipped my head toward Harrelson, surprised by the question. A quick glance at Declan showed me a bland countenance. Dude, what are you hiding?

“I plan to protect Alix,” Declan replied easily. “What do you plan to do about him?”

“If we can find him, arrest him.
