These delaying tactics – with the rebels firing from the cover of trees, fences and rocks, before withdrawing to a new position further down the road – were hugely effective: it took Knyphausen more than five hours to reach Chadds Ford, and cost his vanguard 50 per cent casualties. A number were deceived when some rebels, hiding behind a fence, offered to surrender. ‘But upon advancing,’ wrote Sullivan,

they fired a volley upon our men, and took to their heels, killed and wounded about thirty … By that and preceding skirmishes [the light troops] were much disabled, which occasioned our Brigade i.e. 1st to advance to the front, being separated (when we formed upon a little hill) by a small Creek, which ran between that and the opposite hill on which the enemy took post. We played upon them with two 6 pounders for half an hour, and drove them out of the breastworks, which was made of loose wood, upon the declivity of the hill … They crossed the Brandywine and took post on that side; leaving a few men killed and a few more wounded behind. ’Twas then about 10 o’clock, and the 2nd Brigade with all the Hessians and Artillery joined us.22
