Chapter Seventeen

With Garrett’s lips on hers, it was as though a thunderclap had sounded. The moment was charged, electric, and any ounce of resistance and hesitation she’d had melted away.

God, he was a good kisser.

Garrett’s lips shouldn’t feel this good.

This wasn’t like the previous night, which had been raw and sexual. But it was still wonderful. And she’d been dreaming about kissing him again. If he’d told her in the truck he’d regretted the kiss, she would have been mortified. And disappointed.

Her pulse raced, and as he pulled away, she struggled to catch her breath. He scanned her eyes, a hint of a smile in his, then darted a look at a family sitting with Santa.

The woman in the family was looking at them as though she’d just taken a swig of coffee and found grounds in her cup.

Sam grinned, then pressed another quick kiss to his mouth for good measure.

Linking arms with him, they started back toward the Christmas tree fields. She gave him a sidelong glance when they were sufficiently out of earshot. “Care to explain?”

Garrett shook his head. “Not really.”

As though she was going to let him get away with kissing her and then not telling her why. “Well, you promised you would. So out with it. I’m guessing it had something to do with that pretty woman on Santa’s lap?”

“Nope, I’m good.” Garrett’s jaw tightened.

Sam gasped. Could it be . . .? She stopped and crossed her arms. “Garrett Doyle. Are you having an affair with a married woman?”

Garrett hesitated.

Her eyes widened. “You are!” Disappointment curdled in her throat.

“No.” Garrett cocked a brow at her. “Maybe I just wanted an excuse to kiss you.” Then he turned and continued between the row of trees.

She peered at him, his words making her stomach flutter. Chasing after him, she grabbed him by the elbow. “Wait—”

He stopped, and he chuckled humorlessly. “Her name is Trisha. I’m currently doing a job for her and her husband. A big one.” He stuffed his hands in his pockets. “And every time she can corner me, she comes onto me. I might have told her I have a girlfriend named Sam—so . . .”

Her lips parted. Garrett being hit on by married women at work didn’t entirely surprise her—though his confession about lying about a relationship with her did.

Sam edged closer to him. “Can I confess something too?” Shut up, Sam. Don’t say it . . .

Garrett lifted his chin. “What’s that?”

She moistened her lips with the tip of her tongue. “I’ve been thinking about that kiss in your house all day.” Her words seemed to hang in the frozen puffs of air between them.

He scanned her eyes, a smile twitching at his lips. “You too?”

Maybe it was the hot chocolate or the pale sliver of moonlight or the scent of Christmas trees, but being here with him felt . . . strangely like home. They came together magnetically, and Garrett’s mouth descended on hers.

His hand cradled the back of her head, the other drawing her in by the waist.
