Chapter One

Outside, the snow fell softly on the ground. Patches of moonlight and starlight glimmered on the white sparkly surface. Smiling, Michael Sullivan chuckled. He sipped his steamy hot chocolate quietly.

His phone rang. Reaching into his pocket, he glanced at the screen. Even after all the years of being separated from his family, God had finally brought him home. Still, it didn’t seem possible.

He swiped his finger across the screen and answered it. “Hey, Dad.”

Silence, and then a low rumble of laughter filled the other end of the phone line. “You have no idea how much I have wanted to hear you say that again during those many years. And even though we finally found you a few months ago, its…”

Michael sighed. “I know. I’ve missed you too, Dad.”

“When are you coming down?”

“Soon. I just finished up everything and will be heading out hopefully in the morning. I’ll beat the snowstorm.”

“Good, because this is the first family Christmas we’ve had in a long time.”

“In a very, very, very long time.”

The two Sullivan men laughed. Chewing the inside of his lip, Michael glanced down at the floor. Warmth filled him. Even though he had been talking to his father and mother for months, it still seemed hard to believe. He felt as if he was dreaming and when he woke all of this – his family, his new life, everything – would vanish in a puff of smoke.

“Michael?”

“Yeah?” he said.

“I’m looking forward to the holidays,” Paul said. “Your Mom and I have making sure that this is going to be the best one yet.”

Michael felt his lips curve upward. “I’m sure it will, Dad,” he said. “I’m sure it will.”

Peace filled the young man. Shaking his head, he shoved his hands into his pockets and smiled. It had only been a few months ago when he was finally able to find his family again. He had thought they were dead, but in the end, he was wrong. God had provided and brought him back home. For which, Michael would be forever grateful.

“You have no idea how much I’m looking forward to it,” Michael said. Reaching down, he grabbed his mug of steaming hot chocolate. “I’ll beat the snowstorm, Dad, and then you’ll have me all to yourself.”

“Sounds perfect, son,” Paul Sullivan said on the other end of the line. “I’ll see you too. I know your mother and Anna are planning on making an ample supply of Christmas cookies.”

Michael snorted. For a brief moment, he imagined Kev, his cousin, hoarding all of Anna’s cookies. Kev always said that his girlfriend, Anna, could bake circles around anyone else in the family.

“Make sure Kev doesn’t eat them all before I come,” Michael said with a laugh. “Remember last time? We had to make more cookies because Kev was being a hog.”

Laughter. Shaking his head, Michael Sullivan smiled and sat down in the big comfy chair. Soon, he’d be home and snowstorm or no snowstorm, he had every intention on coming home for Christmas. Twenty years away from them, was too long.
