I don't think you want to do that, Admiral,' the

Doctor replied.

Icktheus stared in horror at what the Doctor

was holding. He recognised the small, dark balls

in the glass tubes instantly.

'Lower your weapons!' he ordered his

commandos. ' He has the roe!'

The soldiers did as they were told.

Rory stepped out beside the Doctor and Amy

followed him, with Jane bringing up the rear.

'Now what?' Amy asked. 'We can't hold these

eggs hostage.'

'We're not holding them hostage,' the Doctor

said. 'We're just holding them! I'd never do anything

to hurt them. Now, Admiral Icktheus, on the other

hand, has a nasty little mind so he thinks nasty little

thoughts. Without asking us, he has assumed we

are doing what he would do.'

'That doesn't answer the question, Doctor,'

Amy looked sideways at him.

'We just have to wait.'

'What?'

'For Makron and his father!'

Almost as he spoke, there was a deep, loud

flapping sound. A vast flying fish the size of an

airliner appeared above the edge of the crater and

then landed in the lake. On its back, there were

thirty or so Shoal members. Amy recognised

Makron and Darkin among them.

Darkin climbed down from the flying fish and

approached Icktheus. Makron ran along behind,

holding the Doctor's translation device.

'Stop this, Icktheus,' Darkin said. 'These

creatures are not our enemies.'

'You are soft and weak,' Icktheus replied. 'I have

over one hundred troops. You have a handful. I will

not surrender my advantage that easily, Governor!'

'I thought you would say that,' Darkin said. At

that moment, an even louder flapping sound filled

the air. It was coming from everywhere. More

than fifty flying fish appeared, surrounding the top

of the water volcano. Each had thirty or so low

swimmers on their backs, all wearing the belt of

purple seaweed that represented the Assembly.

Icktheus bowed his head. He knew he had lost.

Two of the Assembly's low swimmers stepped

forward and locked the admiral's fins in what

looked like silver handcuffs.

'You are under arrest for treason, Admiral,'

Darkin said. 'I will see to it that you will have a

fair trial.'

The admiral was led away onto the back of one

of the flying fish. With an enormous roar from its

huge wings, it lifted into the air and dived down,

away from the Fount.

The Doctor handed one of his jars to Rory and

then climbed down the submarine's external ladder.

He rushed forward to greet Darkin and Makron.

'These are yours, I think,' he said showing the

high swimmers the tube with the eggs in it.

'They can join the others,' Darkin said.

The Doctor looked at the beautiful, violet

coloured water of the lake. It was full of the dark

fish eggs. He smiled. 'May we?' he asked.

'By all means.'

The Doctor waved his companions and

Captain Clancy over to him. They climbed down

the ladder, careful not to disturb the eggs in their

protective tubes. Amy reached the Doctor first.

'Go on, then,' the Doctor said, gesturing at

the water.

Amy didn't have to be told twice. She unscrewed

the lid of the tube and bent down by the water's

edge. Then she gently poured the liquid into the

lake. With a satisfying splash, the egg tumbled

into the Fount. Rory and Jane did the same as the

Doctor added the last two.

'All safe and sound,' he said.

'Not bad for a day's work,' Rory agreed.
