Chapter Seven
A thin white woman sat in front of my sister and me, after school, with a note pad in her small lap. She was just staring at us, waiting for one of us to start talking.
I kept my eyes on her nice rectangular framed glasses, thinking of how much she had to pay for them. Judging by how much she charged for an hour I’d say two appointments for the frames and a half of one for the prescriptions.
“So,” she huffed, “Alicia. Is there anything you’d like to say to your sister?”
“Is this what you went to school for, Doc,” I asked smartly. “Charge us three hundred dollars for this hour just to skate your way through it?”
“Alicia don’t do that,” Resha told me, rolling her eyes.
“You don’t tell me what to do. You sit there and look pretty like you always do, just to avoid handling the real debate on the table. Your looks get you through everything don't they?”
“You insecure, little—”
“Now Maresha,” the doctor stopped her. “This is a place where you can express yourself freely.”
“So she can sit there and bash me like that?”
“Don’t call it bashing, just call it releasing the inner troubles.”
“Inner,” I scoffed. “She has one of those?”
“You not gon’ sit there and keep talking to me like that!” she yelled at me.
“I’ll talk to you how I want! You’re the one who left me to die!”
“I didn’t fucking leave you, Alicia! I came back!”
“And if they weren’t able to save me, don’t you think I would be dead and it’d be too late for me to be saved by you?”
“Goddammit! I came back sooner than later!”
“And don’t you think it was almost too fucking late?”
“No,” she squealed, trying her best to fight tears. “I had to make myself stable enough for me to come back and get you!”
“So you living in the lap of luxury, laughing it up with a couple of people you didn’t know, was being stable, Resha? Please.”
“This is what this is about? Dinner?”
“It’s more than dinner,” I argued, leaning over my chair toward her. “I was fucking starving at night, trying to save food for Dolly, when you’re eatin' five star meals! That’s fucking saving me, alright. And when I was shot and raped, you were at home, sleeping pretty so that you wouldn’t mess up your hair for the next work day at your two hundred and twenty-five thousand dollar a day profit casino! I did my fucking research! What you think this was about? Dinner? You can go to hell, Maresha.” I felt her eyes on me as I slumped in my chair, folding my arms. It just felt ten times better to get it all off my chest.
“I did a lot more for you than to leave you, Alicia,” she almost mumbled. “It was you those drug dealers wanted, not Dolly! I was the one who stood in their way of getting to you, keeping you safe from being humiliated; being passed between dirty dick
