THANK YOU

THAT EVENING, D’S WORDS reeled through my head like a roller-coaster. ‘When your feet hurt, then get up and walk on them.’ ‘Push yourself beyond your pain threshold.’ I wondered if he took such liberties with all his patients, and though I never admitted it, secretly I hoped he did, because over the next few days I realised how vital his words had been. I SMSed him a thank-you note. ‘You were harsh, D,’ I wrote. ‘And I thank you for it.’

Slowly, I became aware of some changes. They were tiny – almost invisible to anyone else – but, to me, they were enormous. I was managing to sit up longer in a chair. To work longer. To stave off the inevitable descent into bed until after sunset. To stagger to the kitchen for a midnight bowl of cornflakes. Not only was I coping with some things I hadn’t thought possible, the process was changing the way I felt about myself and my future. The prospect of recovery filled me with a forgotten sense of hope.
