CHAPTER FIFTEEN

The next morning started with me getting yelled at by one of the kitchen maids. She wanted me to wash an enormously large pot with a thick layer of sticky leftover food burnt on the bottom. I was in the process of scrubbing it when Larisa came to the kitchen. She stood right behind me and criticized everything I was doing.

“What? No one ever told you how to clean the dishes? You are absolutely useless!” She yelled at me. Two maids in the back stopped their preparations for breakfast to giggle at my expense.

“What are you looking at? Get back to work!” She snapped, glaring at the two girls.

“If you’re not able to pull your weight, you’ll be moved to the blood slaves,” she glanced toward the exit. I looked back to see Noah entering the kitchen and heading straight to a tray of food.

“That’s it! It looks worse than before. Get out of here!” Still yelling, Larisa pushed me away from the pot.

“Noah, I need you to take the potatoes outside the gate,” she barked at the musician.

“No! Why me? Again?” He frowned, throwing a stale piece of grey bread back on the tray.

“Pick up the bread you just touched! Right now!” She yelled. Larisa pushed a basket of potatoes toward him and added, “And there are two of them I need you to take.”

“And how am I supposed to carry both of them?” He snapped.

“Hey, you!” She shouted, turning to look at me. “Pick that up and follow him!” Larisa commanded.

“Not her! Anyone but her.” Noah rolled his eyes.

Larisa walked over to the small potato filled room. Surprisingly, she fished out an old dark grey cloak that had apparently been left there earlier.

“Take this!” She threw it at me with such force, a cloud of dust lifted in the air hitting my nose and I coughed.

They should perform on stage together!

I put the cloak on, picked up the basket, and followed the musician out of the kitchen, wrinkling my nose.

We walked without talking or looking at each other as Noah led the way outside. As soon as we were at a safe distance, Noah turned toward me.

“How was it?” He smirked.

“Not bad. Not bad at all,” I responded with a smile.

“Of course, I have had years of practice, believe me,” he added.

“So, what are we doing? What’s your plan?” I asked looking at the people on the streets. There were workers, servants, and some vampires moving about the city. The vampires were easy to spot in their expensive clothes and by the way they acted like they owned everything. They were clearly the reason why the roads were not buried under several feet of snow. We both noticed the crows that were lined up on the roofs of the buildings and jumping around in the snow on the ground.

“The kitchen provides some leftover food to help feed the people that aren’t allowed inside the city. We will deliver the food and check the passage along the way. Simple plan,” he responded.
