Hours later, Bryce looked up from the bottom of his pint. He recognised the distinctive falsetto joining in with his deep bass and Lancelot’s true tenor as they sang minstrels’ songs of woebegone love. Indeed, a cacophony of off-key voices chorused around them as one drunken knight following the other joined in, many making up syllables as they sang along, true in spirit if not in words.

“Edward! Thomas! Lance, meet my friends.”

Lance lifted a hand, deep in earnest song, spilling his troubled heart into his empty tankard, seemingly much taken by the sound of his own forlorn voice echoing back at him.

Bryce staggered from the tents, his head throbbing, his stomach queasy, leaving Lancelot with his comrades to join his own.

“Bryce!”

Bryce closed his eyes as Edward’s voice resonated in his aching skull.
