A lot of farm dogs prowled the country roads west of the Assiniboine River. Most would come and bark at me. I'd either bark back or simply give them a stare, and either response would make them cower off. But one particular Alsatian only got more vicious when I barked at him. He bounded towards me, baring sharp teeth and showing me fiery eyeballs. I tugged out my Canadian flag and waved the stick in Fido's face. I love dogs, I really do, but at this point it was either him or me. He wouldn't be moved. I cautiously wheeled Caesar up the road, holding the stick in the dog's direction as I went. He followed me up the road, howling, before losing interest and hurtling off back to the farm.
