1.1 Functions of Membrane

The membrane in the proton exchange membrane fuel cells is made up of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE). PTFE is a combination of the synthetic polymer, called as ionomer. The main function of the membrane is to split the electrons from the hydrogen gas and allows only the flow of protons through it, from which the name proton exchange membrane was derived. The separated electrons flow through the external circuit and reach the cathode side to combine with the oxygen gas. Then, all these are combined together to form water, and small amount of heat is generated. The reaction is also influenced by the catalytic activity. The overall reactions taking place in the fuel cell are as follows.
