1. The Izumrud was one of only a few Russian ships to escape the Battle of Tsushima Strait (May 14th–15th, 1905), in which nearly the entire Russian Navy was destroyed by the Japanese, effectively deciding the outcome of the Russo-Japanese War. Fearing that the port city of Vladivostok was under blockade by enemy ships after the battle, the captain of the Izumrud instead sought safe haven in Saint Vladimir Bay, where haste and poor visibility led to the ship becoming stranded on the rocks on May 18th, 1905 (Alliluyev and Bogdanov 2004). See plate 21 for the wreck of the Izumrud.

2. Aeolian processes are features shaped by the wind.

3. Conglomerates are sedimentary rock with rounded fragments cemented together, whereas graywacke is a type of sandstone characterized by its gray color (Parker 2003).

4. Having narrowly escaped capture or death at the Battle of Tsushima Strait, when the Izumrud became stranded in Saint Vladimir Bay, its captain, V. N. Ferzen, several days now without sleep, was convinced the Japanese were still in pursuit and would soon arrive to claim the Izumrud as their prize. Therefore, after its crew and some key supplies were ashore, he ordered the ship destroyed on May 19th, 1905 (Alliluyev and Bogdanov 2004).

5. See plate 20.

6. Arsenyev calls these Hytilis edulis, presumably meaning Mytilus edulus, or the blue mussel. However, this species does not occur in the Pacific Ocean. He was likely observing the similar-looking giant mussel (Crenomytilus grayanus).

7. Almost certainly the giant Pacific octopus (Octopus dofleini), the largest octopus species in the world, which grows up to 5 meters in length and attains 60 kilograms in weight (Vrishch 2007).

8. In 1906, a 3-kopek copper coin was approximately 28 millimeters in diameter, and a 5-kopek silver piece was approximately 15 millimeters in diameter.
