Apollo

“Apollo?” Cassandra’s voice is drowsy and warm. The voice of a woman thoroughly satisfied, waking up in her lover’s embrace.

Which means the warm body in my arms is a dream. The real Cassandra would never fall asleep next to me. “Mmm…” I tighten my hold around her waist. She feels real.

Even more so, when she scratches my arm and thrashes free of my hold. “By Circe… You fell asleep? I can’t believe you fucking did that!”

Not a dream. I sit up, blinking sleep off my eyelids. This is the most restful I’ve felt in ages, and the sun isn’t even up yet. “You fell asleep too.” I regret saying it the moment it’s out of my lips.

Cassandra throws me a glare that could set me on fire. “Yeah, well…” She sputters. “I’m in my bed. This is where I sleep. You’re the one who shouldn’t be here.”

Fuck. She let herself relax with me, and now she’s freaking out. That’s why she’s attacking me. I don’t need our bond to read her; this isn’t the first time she’s lashed out at me after letting me get a hairbreadth closer than she usually allows. Which is not at all. Chaos knows where we’ll end up if I speak my mind, though, so I toss the covers back and get up.

“You’re leaving.” It’s not a question. “Don’t you have anything to say for yourself?” Her eyes throw daggers at me, her hair is all over the place, and she’s fucking breathtaking. I want to jump back into bed and make her moan again.

Instead, I say, “You want me gone. I’m going.”

I could be dressed and back home in the blink of an eye, but I want to give her time to reconsider. To invite me back. To say we can stay up together till morning.

Plus, she loves staring at my ass when I’m not looking.

I prowl to the bathroom, while she fumes hard enough that it leaks to me through our bond. I can’t make out whether her anger is because I’m still here, or because I didn’t try to stay, but I don’t try to peer into her thoughts. I run the shower and drown out all traces of her in my head.

The hot water soothes agitation I didn’t realize was fraying my nerves. I’m choosing to see this as a good thing. See the progress we made, after being around each other only twenty-four hours. Forget the past couple minutes, when she looked at me like I betrayed her all over again.

I didn’t mean to fall asleep. It just felt so good and relaxing, cuddling up with her.

And I need to start using a better excuse for fucking up than I didn’t mean to. Or—you know—need to stop fucking up.

I think the bathroom back to clean and spotless, defog the shower stall, and grab a towel before reemerging. I won’t antagonize her. Just get dressed and leave, with a renewed date for tomorrow. And I will put on the towel after allowing her another glimpse of my cock.
