Sid had left from Riaâs home that morning and had gone straight to Jakeâs apartment. He hadnât been as soft with Matthew as Alisha had been. In fact, heâd slapped the fellow hard to wake him up from whatever daze he was in and twisted his arm until he got the information about Jake. Then, he had booked a cab and had proceeded on a long drive to Ooty, ultimately finding the address that Matthew had given him.
It was a small cottage with an overgrown yard and a rickety gate. The door had been left ajar, and when Sid entered, he was shocked to see so many guys lying around the house in different corners. Some asleep, some smoking joints, drugged and sprawled all over in a smoke-filled room.
They all looked so bedraggled that at first, Sid had trouble making out which one of them was Jake. Finally, he saw Jake, curled on the floor against a chair, looking pathetic, to say the least. He had a week-long untrimmed beard. He smelled like he hadnât bathed.
âYou?â Jake said, surprisingly recognising him.
âWhat are you doing here, dude?â
âWhere am I?â
âFar away from home.â Sid bent down next to Jake. âOr have you forgotten where you are?â
âI donât know how long Iâve been here. Iâm just a mess. Somebody stole my wallet. I just want to go home now. What day is it?â
âItâs been days, and I can see how a good bath and getting you fed and out of here will be the best thing to do.â
Jake didnât resist when Sid helped him up. With one haul, Sid picked Jake off the floor, slung his arm around his shoulders and dragged him out the door, put him into the cab that heâd kept waiting outside, and together, they rode back. Jake couldnât have spoken much, even if he had wanted to. He could barely even sit straight.
After a round trip of almost sixteen hours, they were back in Bangalore. Sid took Jake to his house, and called Alisha and Ria to let them know that Jake was back.
Alisha came first and cried with joy when she saw Jake and hugged him over and over again. She couldnât stop thanking Sid. âPromise me, you wonât ever be friends with those guys again,â she said to Jake, her eyes and nose all red and watery. Jake was still a bit disoriented but he took in the scolding Alisha gave him without a word and promised to listen to her, next time.
Ria came in a bit, looking really worried too but was instantly relieved when she saw that Jake was okay. âIâm so glad,â she said, hugging Sid tightly. âAlisha and I are so totally in awe of you.â
After Sid narrated the whole story of how heâd ultimately found Jake, they left Jake and Alisha to catch up. Ria begged Sid to come back to Grandpaâs house because they still had so much work to do.
Ria and Sid sat in the auto, but because Sid was taking up so much space Ria only had a small corner.
