Prison Blues

A few hundred miles from my home, I sat in an orange jumpsuit, prison socks, and flat blue shoes. The uniform was nothing like my street wardrobe that consisted of diamonds, expensive sneakers, and designer jeans.

Playing dominoes in the common area with the rest of the crew, I was so anxious I couldn’t sit still. Paterski better bring his ass on, I thought as I threw the dominoes down on the table. The last week had been a waiting game. I received a letter from Paterski claiming that the motions had been filed and they were set to go to court soon. Paterski also told me that he would be back to the prison to discuss some things in person.

He better have his ass back up here soon, I thought as I counted the dots on the dominoes.

"WALKER" yelled the guard. I turned around and smiled. Paterski came quicker than I though. I sprung up from the domino table, and walked over to the guard as he went through the same handcuffing routine. I was escorted to the waiting area again, and sat in a chair with only bullet proof glass separating me from my visitor.

I thought it was Mr.Paterski, but it was my boy Pedro. I didn’t expect to see Pedro up here so soon. We mostly communicated through text messages on my illegal cell phones. That was very seldom since I often sold the cell phones I had or ended up throwing them away to avoid getting caught by the guards. We both picked up the phone on their side of the wall and began talking.

“Wassup P, what you doing up here man?” Not that I wasn’t happy to see my friend, but it wasn’t in our plan.

“Just got some updates. I needed to tell you about them in person.” Pedro said with a serious look.

“Aight, lay it on me.”, I shifted in my seat preparing for the worse.

Somebody must have died. I prayed silently that it wasn’t somebody too close to me.

“Remember you told me to watch out for S and see what she’s doing” Pedro said taking a swallow. Pedro promised that he would keep me informed about Shavae’s whereabouts.

“Yeah, what’s going on?” I was getting more upset by the second.

“I’ve been watching her house for a while and s-she’s dipping out man.” Pedro managed to say.

I looked at Pedro in shock, but I shouldn’t have been surprised. Putting down my head, I tried to think back to when I last spoke to Shavae.

“But I talked to her the other day and she seemed fine. We talked all weekend as a matter of fact” I tried to convince myself that Pedro was lying, but it wasn’t working.

“I saw her with a guy leaving her house. She kissed him goodbye and he drove off. I don’t know who he is, yet. But the motherfucka had Tennessee plates.” Pedro said as he made a mental note to call his connect down at the DMV to run the plate number that he wrote down.
