CHAPTER 9

Darcy pushed through the glass and metal door and stepped out into the dental office parking lot. It was funny. She finally remembered where she knew the name Highlander from. Right here, on the security sticker on the door.

Had she been watching where she was going, instead of reading the sticker as she stepped backward toward her car, she wouldn’t have lost all her breath on a shocked yelp when someone grabbed her by the upper arm and spun her around.

As her head whipped to the right, a large form suddenly obstructed the blur of color, blocking light and further suffocating her, as firm lips came down on hers. Arms unyielding as steel, pulled her tight against a solid body.

In an instant of recognition she couldn’t explain, she closed her eyes, tipped her head back willingly, and gave in to the kiss.

“Sorry if I scared you,” Aaro said, releasing her in increments.

Darcy waited until his fingers dragged the length of her arm and fell away, before moving. “You didn’t,” she lied. “I knew it was you.”

Aaro leaned in to nuzzle her neck. “Liar,” he chuckled. “You didn’t at first.”

She stepped back to look at him and her breath caught all over again, ensnared in those searing blue eyes.

“Yes, well, I was hoping to hide the fact that I often let strangers kiss me in the parking lot.” She tried to sound matter-of-fact, but her heart soared when he reached for her hand and linked his fingers with hers. “What are you doing out here accosting women, anyway?”

“Not women, just you.”

In a simple gesture she found so endearing, he brought their joined hands to his lips and pressed a warm kiss to the back of her wrist. Her body tingled all over.

“I thought we could grab some dinner,” he said, now swinging their hands between them. “There’s a Thai place I’m dying to try.”

“I’ve never had Thai food.”

“Great, then your first time will be with me.” His eyes darkened as he looked down at her. “We’re going to have a lifetime of firsts.”

Her tongue felt as though it was made of sand. Swallowing didn’t help, since she had no saliva. “Uh....”

He watched her another moment, then chuckled and led her past her car to his.
