Chapter Twelve

SELENA

After some ten minutes chasing the edge of the pack’s territory, Apollo and I arrive at a village. It can’t even be called a town. A dozen wood houses, three old pickups, a farm, a well. A couple plows the fields when we break the line of trees, and both raise their heads to glimpse at the newcomers.

From the look on their face, they’re not happy to see us.

I motion with my head to Apollo’s wolf. He catches my meaning and turns around, readying to shift back to his human form. I do the same, impressed by how easy it is for us to understand each other even in this form. That might come from the mating bond. I drop the plastic bag I’ve been carrying and shift back. My wolf’s spirit has always been balanced inside me, and it’s easy to change back.

Once I’m human, I hurry to get dressed. Shifters are used to the whole being naked thing, and I’ve changed several times in front of other soldiers in the Ops. It’s different now. It’s Apollo. Self-awareness makes my cheeks warm as I slide into my pants and throw a shirt over my head. I set off once I’m ready, and Apollo follows me in silence.

The couple in the field stand up straighter, waiting for us. I raise a hand in greeting, opening my best smile as I approach. “Good morning. Do you have a moment?”

They look between themselves, then back at us. The man nods. “You two are new.”

I stop a good distance from them, to make sure they won’t feel threatened. Shifter hearing will make sure they can hear us just fine. “We’re not in the pack. I’m Lawrence’s granddaughter. Do you know him?”

Both shake their heads. The man takes one step closer to his mate, a classic protective act. “We don’t have dealings with them,” says the man. “And we would never even see them if we weren’t forced by the alpha.”

“What happened to your alpha?” I ask, cocking my head.

He sneaks glances to both his sides. The woman seems to shudder, even when both sweat under the sun. The man motions for us to approach then turns back to his plowing. “Our alpha was killed, of course. And it wasn’t pretty. We don’t have a choice now. None of us is as strong.”

“It doesn’t matter,” says the woman, not looking at us. “Now that we’re part of a bigger pack, we’ll also be protected.”

The man scoffs. “Against what? Rabbits? The humans don’t come here. It’s too secluded. And even if they came, we’re just a bunch of farmers. They wouldn’t stick around long enough to see us change.” He shoots us a glance. “You’re not spies or anything, are you?”

I grin because I would never say I am a spy if I were. Shaking my head, I put my hands to my hips. “No spies. We’re trying to understand what’s going on here. We heard something about a drug. Do you think the alpha is using it?”

“Oh, yeah.
