Michael watched the ambulance drive away. He kept telling himself Stephanie would be fine, but for some reason he regretted not getting into the ambulance with her. She had begged him to come with her, and he had almost given in, but then he had remembered why he was in Scotland in the first place. He didn’t have time to waste on anything other than securing his mate, and Jennie would probably be back later in the evening and need him to take care of her. She had been exhausted, and Trevor had told them he would call a doctor to get her checked out just in case.

The others were talking as they headed down toward the cottage, but Michael wasn’t in the mood to join in the conversation. He didn’t like that Trevor had taken Jennie to his house, but Michael had been busy at the time, making sure Stephanie settled into the ambulance okay. Knocking on the wolf’s door and demanding to take Jennie to the cottage didn’t seem like a good idea. It might well backfire and provoke Jennie into saying no to him and throwing herself at the wolf instead. That would be a disaster, and he couldn’t risk it.

Instead, he would go back to the cottage and prepare for her arrival. He would make sure his room was tidy, and then he would make her a sandwich in case she was hungry when she got back. Jennie would, of course, sleep in his bed so he could keep an eye on her, and after seeing his concern for her wellbeing, she would be happy to accept his offer. Perhaps what had happened would turn out to be his lucky break.
