Chapter Twelve

Once again, I was at the bar as the winners and losers of the day’s trial began to celebrate like it was their last night on Earth. This time, Todd the bartender came over to me and handed me the whole bottle of tequila, and then he removed himself from my sight. Knox must have really intimidated him.

Speak of the devil, and he shall appear. Knox sat down on the empty bar stool next to me.

“You want to tell me what that little elf friend of yours said to you today when you both disappeared?”

Not looking at him, I said, “Say what?”

He chuckled. “That’s fine. Keep your secrets. I couldn’t care less. I was just making small talk.”

I raised a brow. I had a suspicion the beast was lying. “Sure, beastly.”

“You know that thing that I told you earlier not to talk about?”

I was genuinely confused. “Refresh my memory.”

“The magic you felt as you entered our pack lands.”

I nodded.

“You made that ward vibrate today with the power you used on the vamp.” His voice was low. “The problem with that is every shifter here felt the powerful magic pushing against the wards. Maybe they thought it came from the women who were fighting in the other arena, but you need to be careful how you use your power.”

Somehow, I managed to maintain a blank expression, but the truth was that I was messed up on the inside. I had barely used my powers on her. “Could it have not been someone else? Why are you telling me this?”

“Because sirens don’t have power like that. I also felt it when you were talking to Sammy. You need to be more careful.”

I gave him my full attention, meeting his eyes. “You can tell if I’m lying, correct?”

He gave me a smirk. “That’s why you usually phrase everything in questions instead of statements.”

Ignoring that comment, I said, “If I used my powers, I can promise you that I didn’t use a lot.”

For several seconds, he didn’t say anything. “That’s the thing, Bali. If you didn’t use a lot of power, yet you made the wards shake, what are you truly capable of? Whatever your secrets are, they won’t be secrets for long if you use your power.”

I couldn’t help the little sigh that escaped me. I would have to be extremely careful with how I used my powers. I didn’t want to leave here with a whole pack chasing me.

I swallowed. “Maybe you misread the situation.”

He shrugged. “We just don’t want everyone misreading the situation.”

I gave him a nod, letting him know I had received his warning loud and clear. I would be more careful in the future.

“What are you wearing?” he asked as he roamed his golden eyes over my body.

I turned fully toward him. “Déjà vu. That’s what I’m experiencing. You’ve asked me that before.”

He smiled. “Well, your attire is very … different.”

I looked down at the body con dress that was all black. It had mesh running down between my breast and stopped right above my belly button.
