Chapter Three

Brian had been given the all-clear from Bill to head home to rest and ice his ribs. The first kick had broken one—Brian had felt it—but thankfully it had already healed enough that Bill hadn't been able to tell just by touching him. Brian wasn't about to go to the hospital for an X-ray. He needed to get back to his kids.

He waited until Marcus was free, then walked out of the shop with him, Brian held securely to his side. Marcus's large arm wrapped around him, his hand resting on Brian's hip; his mate was being very careful not to cause him any additional pain.

When I get home tonight, we'll leave the boys with the others and we'll go for a run. Shifting will help.

Sounds great.

Brian heard the happy squeals from his twins before he saw them. Alex had a tight hold on both boys, for which Brian was extremely grateful. If not for their uncle holding them back, Sammy and Dylan would be jumping all over Brian.

Marcus stepped forward and hoisted Sammy, the closer of the two, into his arms. The boys were all arms and legs these days. They were gonna be tall, like their daddy, which Brian was thankful for. He wasn't looking forward to the day they outgrew him though.

Alex lifted Dylan into his arms and stepped close to Brian.

"You okay?' Alex asked. His deep, soothing voice washed over Brian and helped take the last of his agitation away. Alex always had that effect on him. He figured it was because the man was his Alpha; he was made to take care of his pack.

"Yeah. A little sore. Nothing a nice run with my mate won't fix. Until then, I have to take it easy."

Alex nodded. Sammy lay his head down on his dad's shoulder, his arms wrapping around Marcus's neck. His boys were tired, and they needed to get home.

"Daddy," Dylan gasped.

"What, little man?" Brian reached out gently and tucked a stray hair back behind his little guy's ear so he could see him properly.

"The ice cream!"

Sammy bolted upright in Marcus's arms, and his mate had a hard time keeping hold of their son.

"No!" Sammy cried.

Alex chuckled, jostling Dylan in his arms.

"Not funny, Uncle Alex!" Sammy and Dylan said at the same time, causing Alex to laugh even harder.

Brian looked at his mate and noticed the man biting his lip. "It's okay," Brian said. "We'll get some more."

"Pwomise?" Sammy asked as he wiped his eyes. His little guy really was tired.

"Yeah, buddy, I promise," Alex said. "Let me know what flavour, and I'll pick it up on the way home tonight after work."

Sammy and Dylan beamed at their uncle.

"Suck up," Marcus coughed into his hand. Brian automatically wacked his mate for being an ass, then hissed as the pain of the movement and the jarring of hitting solid muscle reverberated through him. He placed his hand carefully against his ribs.

All joking ceased in light of Brian's obvious pain.

"Let's get you all home," Marcus said, and he started steering them all towards the car.
