Our house was dark and silent when I turned the key in the lock. I shot Ryder and Chrys a look.

“Where’s Burgundy?” Chrys asked. “Shouldn’t she be here?”

“I thought so,” I said as Ryder protectively wrapped his arm around me and pulled me over to the side, then pushed the door open slowly.

“Chrys, wait outside for a minute,” he barked at her.

I was slightly afraid to step inside behind Ryder into the pitch-black room. Instantly all of the lights switched on, causing both of us to jump.

“What the—?” Ryder looked into the empty room and then back at me.

“I only thought it,” I said.

“I’ve heard of this.” Ryder narrowed his gorgeous, somber eyes.

“What?” We walked into the house together. Ryder motioned for Chrys to follow.

“The way it was explained to me is that a spell can be cast in many different ways.”

“That’s true,” Chrys piped up.

“What does that mean exactly?” I asked them both.

“It depends on the witch. The type of casting depends on what clan he or she is born into.”

Why didn’t I know more about this? “You mean different types of witchcraft? Like Vodun, Shamanic, Druidic and Wiccan?”

“Something like that,” Ryder responded, looking over at Chrys as we all walked through the living room and into the kitchen.

Trying not to bristle, I manually switched off a few lights on our way, giving the house a more reasonable ambiance.

“There are a lot more types of practices, but yes,” Chrys added as she walked to the stove to heat the kettle. “Some are spell casters like us but even that can be done in different ways. And then there are those who work only with tarot cards, runes or poppets, stuff like that.”

“And within the spell casters?”

Ryder looked at Chrys, who offered him a quick nod before he spoke. “Within casters, it’s my understanding that the most powerful need only to think a spell, but that’s rare. Intention casting and writing a spell are the most difficult. A witch has to be very strong for either of those to work.

Chrys grunted in agreement. “Most use different levels of ceremony. Casting circles and spells.”

I was trying very hard not to be upset that my human boyfriend knew more than me about witches. “And most witches are Wiccan, like us, right?”

“Most witches are Pagan,” Chrys corrected me, not turning around. I felt like a complete idiot. I didn’t even know the difference.

Ryder continued, “The other factor, I was told, is the witch themselves. Some are just more powerful than others, like your mother. A witch’s age has a lot to do with it too, but more than that is a witch’s lineage.”

Chrys turned to face us. Her eyes flashed with anger, but she said nothing.

“Then why aren’t Chrys, Iphi and I the same? Power wise.”

“I don’t know,” Ryder said, walking over to me and placing a kiss on my cheek.

“Iphi and Chrys seem to have similar powers.” But Iphi was much better at controlling hers, I didn’t voice aloud.

“Enough. This isn’t the time for a lesson on witches.
