Chapter Eighteen

Michael informed Aella that training with Torin would wait until tomorrow. After she had given him and Ashlyn the full rundown on her meditative journey and how she fought off her reflection, Michael felt that training would exhaust her even more.

Aella wasn’t going to complain about it either; even in her meditative state, she felt winded from kicking her reflection in the face and pushing over the mirror. They had returned to the lounge to find Torin and Cahtel, and when they entered, Aella was a little disappointed that Christopher wasn’t amongst them.

“Where is Christopher?” She says, hoping he didn’t end up leaving altogether.

Michael rounds the bar, pulling out three glasses, and she notices that Torin and Cahtel already have one. Cocktail hour is evidently a thing here.

“Torin took him back to his townhome in the city. He decided to stay there instead, said he didn’t want to impose.” Michael says, filling the glasses with two ice cubes in each.

Torin scoffs, rolling his eyes, “Yeah, except he is imposing by having me be his chauffeur.”

Cahtel snickers, finding amusement in Torin’s obligation, says, “About time you get tasked with something useful.”

Coming back around the bar, Michael hands Aella and Ashlyn a glass, then reaches across the bar to grab his own before sitting down at his usual spot. Aella decided to remain standing since she was unsure how long she had been sitting in the meditation room and felt like her legs needed circulation.

“So, how was your meditation Aella?” Cahtel asks, licking out of his glass.

Michael cuts in, draping his arm over the back of the chaise, and says, “Elissa spoke to her.”

Cahtel coughs, choking on the bourbon, and snaps his head up toward Aella.

“She visited you? What did she say? How?”

Aella takes a moment to enjoy a couple of sips from her glass before going into it again. It wasn’t that she didn’t want to talk about Elissa speaking with her; it was that she knew she would have to repeat the story for a third time with Christopher and was tired of it.

“She didn’t say a lot, but what she said was a lot, if that makes sense?”

Cahtel cocks his head, looking confused, and she lets out a breath, “Basically, she told me that I have to find acceptance, and every action has a reaction and some other things. To sum it all up, I have to do the inner work.”

Cahtel deadpans her, not appreciating her tone, and she doesn’t blame him. Aella was tired and a little on edge, and even though she had conquered something awful, she just wanted to soak in a tub and eat a good meal.

“Right, Torin will pick up Christopher for dinner. We have another busy day ahead of us tomorrow, and we still need to discuss some things with Christopher present. I would prefer not to do it over dinner, but I am afraid we must, even though we are celebrating his…homecoming.” Michael says, tilting his glass while contemplating whether he should have a refill, “You may all be excused except for Aella.
