IN THE MORNING, Caleb dressed in a pair of sweatpants a size too big, with a faded band T-shirt. He paused to look in the mirror, debating on throwing on some eyeliner. He wasn’t really feeling it, though. Instead, he blew hair out of his face and walked back into the bedroom where Marcus was getting dressed.

“Someone’s angling for a lazy day,” Marcus said after taking in his choice of clothing.

It was a good assumption. Caleb usually dressed this way to spend the day at home on the couch, or for working on his art. “If we’re doing ceremony planning, I wanna be comfortable.”

“Fair enough.” Marcus was dressed in his usual tight jeans and a plain T-shirt. He ran his fingers through his hair to straighten it a little. “Ready to go?”

“All set.”

They made their way down the hall, toward the dining room. According to Marcus, they didn’t always have breakfast or lunch, since most of the vampires who lived there year-round did their own cooking. But with so many people back home due to the Inquisition scare, a buffet would be set.

Walking in, Caleb spotted Rowan right away, sitting at a small table with a book in hand as he picked at his food. “No one else up?” Caleb asked, startling Rowan.

“Shaw was grumbling about getting a shower when I left. He heard Keenan mention sleeping in when we were taken to our rooms. Dunno about the others.”

Caleb hummed, checking his phone to make sure no one tried to text him.

“Caleb.” He looked over, finding Marcus standing next to one of the few occupied tables. “Come meet my sisters.”

When Caleb glanced at Rowan in question, he didn’t look enthused. “We already met,” Rowan said dryly, going back to his book.

Well, this should be interesting. Caleb walked over, nestling in against Marcus’s side.

The first woman looked to be in her late thirties. Her dark brown hair was cut at her ears, framing a stern face with hazel eyes and plush lips. Her companion appeared slightly younger. Her long black hair was pulled back into a ponytail, brown eyes and faded terracotta skin placing her origins farther south. She, at least, seemed more welcoming.

“This is Cordelia,” Marcus introduced the first, “and Hestia. This is my mate, Caleb.”

“Nice to meet you,” Caleb said.

Hestia grinned, standing to hug him. “Welcome to the family.”

Cordelia hummed, seeming disinterested. “Yes, welcome to this dysfunctional thing we call a family.”

Hestia smacked her shoulder. “Be nice,” she hissed. Cordelia brushed her off and went back to eating. “Ignore her,” Hestia told Caleb. “She’s always like this in the morning.”

“Apparently it runs in the family,” Caleb deadpanned, eyes sliding over to Marcus.

“Fuck off,” Marcus said, only making his point. “I’m getting food.”

Caleb wanted to follow—he was hungry as well, and he wasn’t very comfortable being left alone with these two—but Hestia was still grinning at him, and he didn’t have the heart. “So,” Caleb tried for casual conversation, “how do you fall in line with Marcus?”

“Oh, Delia is the oldest girl, but Bryce is first in line.
