CHAPTER 26

As good as Nicolette was feeling about herself, she did have a few doubts, but she didn’t want to share them. She’d never found any Cry Violet leaves, and hadn’t been able to get ahold of Verity and Paxton. They hadn’t gotten back to her and, with Declan declining, she’d decided to try without them and hope for the best.

She’d brought along the cat she’d used in the library, and fortunately, it was fine with being held.

When they arrived at the trailhead, she was quick to gather her things, and they headed out to the grave once more.

They walked slower this time. Declan seemed overly-tired, and Gavin had to help him on the way up.

When they finally arrived at the cemetery, they wended their way through the graves, and before they knew it they were standing in front of Isolda’s grave.

Once there, Declan fell to his knees, his face overcome with grief.

Nicolette felt a twinge of guilt.

She’d been having so much fun today, and felt so confident, like she’d made a breakthrough, but the man was in serious pain, and the weight of that suddenly fell on her shoulders.

She placed cat food on the edge of the grave, and set the cat down. It settled in to eat.

She carefully set out her four implements, this time she’d even brought a compass to make sure that she laid them exactly right. Next, she handed Gavin a small spade and he hacked through the grass and dug up some of the dirt of the grave.

She opened the leather spell book, opened the bowl that she carried, and sprinkled the grass on the grave with the ingredients she’d mixed together.

Urging her magic to work, she blew a teaspoon worth of salt over the area, then opened her grandmother’s spell book, and read the words aloud,

I release you from this world,

Go and find your peace.

Your journey is at an end,

may you rest in eternal peace.

I call upon the four corners,

the four winds of the sky.

The elements of fire, water, earth, air,

to bind the spirit to its eternal rest.
