Chapter 7

NEW HOPE

ATLANTA, GEORGIA AND ABBOTTSVILLE,

PENNSYLVANIA, JANUARY 1985

Patsy Joiner had an acquaintance named Joyce Knapton. And one day she shared Joyce’s personal testimony with us. Joyce had been diagnosed as having incurable cancer. Her doctors recommended a radical hysterectomy and chemotherapy treatment, for there seemed to be no other alternative in the medical arena. Joyce did research with hopes of discovering other options. She located, and was later admitted to a clinic in Florida headed by Dr. Carey Reams.

Dr. Reams was a biochemist who developed and perfected a technique to test and treat terminally ill patients through nutrition using a biological theory of ionization and nutrition. Dr. Reams was also a Christian who believed in praying for the sick. With the treatment she received at the Reams Clinic and trusting God for healing, Joyce was given a clean bill of health. She became cancer free and had no reoccurrence.

Patsy told us that Joyce studied under Dr. Reams. Now, she too was having success, helping people by using the same techniques and treatments. After much prayer and consideration, we decided to make an appointment with Joyce. We had never heard of the nutritional concept for healing but were eager to try anything that might give Christopher a fighting chance to live.

Carole, Christopher, and I met with Joyce in her home. She made us feel very much at ease with her gentle way and loving manner. She asked me some very pointed questions about Christopher. I especially remember her asking what side of the brain stem the tumor was located. When I told her it was the left side, Joyce’s expression went blank and her eyes widened as she looked into mine. She shared later that she realized with the tumor on the left side, Christopher had little chance of survival without a supernatural intervention. The results of Joyce’s testing were not promising. There was only a minute chance that nutrition could help, but we were willing to try.

Carole rushed from store to store, buying the necessary juicer, food, and nutritional supplements to begin Christopher’s nutritional program. Though mentally and physically exhausted, she proceeded with every ounce of energy she could find. Several days passed and no evidence of a positive change could be seen in our son. As a matter of fact, Christopher’s condition was declining even more rapidly. Because of the size of the tumor, the pressure on Christopher’s brain stem had affected his equilibrium, rendering him helpless to sit or stand on his own. Carole and I carried our little boy’s limp body from room to room, placing pillows around him to support his body. The paralysis had also affected Christopher’s ability to speak clearly, making it difficult for him to verbalize and to communicate. It became more difficult to get food and liquid into his body. The small amount he was able to swallow would often result in regurgitation. It was heartbreaking and very obvious that we were standing face to face with the dark spirit of death. We cried out, “God, please help us!”

Joyce suggested that we might consider talking with Dr.
