Opening the bakery door, Jay fell into the scent of fresh bread and vanilla. Heaven smelled like this, with a side of lavender.

Melisande the baker glanced up from loading pastries into a pink box.

“Good morning, Jay. Would you like your usual?”

“Morning.” After one day, he had a usual? Small towns were the same regardless of their country. His mouth watered at the thought of pain au chocolat, but his eyes feasted on the display case. “Can you give me one of everything on the bottom row?”

She chuckled. Her smiled mirrored her round jaw.

“I can. How did you fare with the storm?”

“Snug and warm. Chronos restored the integrity of the house, the plumbing, and the heating.” Coming from the mountains of northern Arizona, Jay appreciated everything.

Melisande’s hand hovered over the roll of string.

“And your…your guest?”

Nysia. Thoughts of her burned away the chill clinging to Jay’s skin. So much for time and distance working their magic.

“She’s fine. I’ve introduced her to the delights of the internet.”

At least, he hoped she was still enthralled with the Internet. He didn’t want to think of the number of appliances she could take apart while he was gone.

“About her…”

He raised his hand. His thoughts on the subject were already distorted, no point in adding another’s in the mix.

“Speaking of the mayor, have you seen Chronos?”

The baker pursed her lips for a moment then pointed into a shadowy corner near the back of the bakery.

“His usual spot.”

Usual spot. Usual breakfast. Seems like a lot of folks in Saint Sylvestre were stuck in a rut. At least Nysia had an excuse for not changing.

“Be back in a few.” He hitched his chin at Melisande then headed into the shadows. The space he was headed for brightened as he approached. Magic. Not even modern conveniences could hold a candle to it. And Nysia couldn’t take it apart. He chuckled.

The darkness disappeared entirely, and Chronos looked up from dissecting his tomatoes. Sand ran out of the hourglass sitting by his empty bread basket. His scythe was propped up in the corner.

“Back for another half-dozen chocolate croissants?”

“We’re going to try the bottom row this time.” Jay braced his hands on the back of the wrought iron chair.

“Everything Melisande bakes is divine.” Chronos shoveled down the last bites of his breakfast then waved his hand. The dishes disappeared as if they had never been. “What is troubling you?”

He pointed to the chair under Jay’s hands. Pulling it out, Jay spun it around and straddled it. Great. He was here before the old man, and his tongue had knotted.

Chronos smoothed his flowing white beard over his stomach.

“Does this have something to do with Nysia?”

Jay nodded. Start at the beginning. Don’t mention the kiss until you give it context. He squirmed in his seat. I don’t want to disappear like the food.

“I kissed her.”

He clamped his hands around his skull and squeezed. When had he lost control of his tongue?

Chronos combed his fingers through his beard.

“And did she return this kiss?”

Had she? He closed
