“Look, I know you not really the ‘going out’ type but based on how I’ve watched you sulking around for the entire week, I think you need to start.”

Groaning, I turned around on my bed to lie flat on her back, eyes pointed to the ceiling to watch the oscillating blades of my fan whirl by. Cyndria was right; I was sulking my way through the days. Gucci had called once, and we had a great conversation only for him to not call or show his face outside of my job the entire week. I didn’t know who was taking his little sister to ballet practice, but it wasn’t him. And though it shouldn’t have affected me all that much, I’d been in a funk all week. Why would he push his way into my life only to disappear?

“I don’t feel like going out. You know that’s not my thing.”

“No, it’s not your thing. It’s my thing and I want you to do it with me,” Cyndria said, holding her ground. “So go ahead and get ready. I’ll be at your place in about two—”

“Cyndria, I said no. I don’t go out, that’s not me. And besides, I’ve actually got somewhere I need to go in like fifteen minutes. And I won’t feel like doing anything after it.”

Peeling my body up from my bare mattress, I held the phone to my ear as I walked to the laundry room to check on the clothes I was washing. After cycling through the dryer for over an hour, they were still wet. Sucking the skin off my teeth, I slammed the dryer door shut and started it for another cycle.

“Where are you going and who are you going with?”

“It’s a class,” I told her, trying to be as vague as possible. The last thing I needed was for Cyndria to be all up in my business. I would be locked into the start of another conversation and spend the last fifteen minutes I had left listening to her give bad advice that I couldn’t use.

“A class? Oh, the boredom. And this is what you want to flake on me for? Some school shit?” She groaned as if my need to learn something was causing me physical pain. “But you know what? Don’t mind me. I’m really just hatin’ on the fact that I’m not as smart as you. I wish I could get my head in a book instead of up this nigga’s ass. I spend way too much time worried ‘bout a motherfucka who ain’t worried ‘bout me.”

I bit down on my bottom lip. At least she said it, so I didn’t have to.
