Matteo had known he was risking Casey not taking his hand. As good as it felt to have her hand in his, he could feel how tense she was and that she didn’t really want to speak to him. He suspected that if they had been alone then she would have refused to go for a walk with him.

They reached the promenade. ‘Let’s walk along here for a bit, shall we?’ he suggested.

He felt her start to pull her hand from his but then she looked up at him before turning her head and looking in her friends’ direction. Alex was smiling after them and Matteo wondered if that was why Casey had kept her hand in his.

A few seconds later, when they were hidden from everyone else by a garden fence, Casey slid her hand from his. Matteo couldn’t manage to hide his hurt. He stopped and stared at her. ‘Please don’t be like that, Casey. I really didn’t mean to offend you earlier. I promise I was busy otherwise I would have loved to have made you breakfast like I’d offered.’

She frowned and stared at him and he noticed the hurt in her eyes that was immediately replaced by annoyance.

‘Did you truly think that’s why I’m annoyed with you?’ She shook her head and scowled at him. ‘Matteo, I’m not put out because you didn’t cook for me. If that’s what you’re thinking.’

It wasn’t? ‘I’m sorry, I don’t understand.’

She glared at him. ‘Seriously! You think I’m that petty, or—’ she seemed to be struggling to come up with the right words ‘—or downright childish that I’d be angry with you because you didn’t cook for me?’

He had no idea what he was supposed to have done. Frustrated, he held his arms outstretched. ‘Then what? Please explain to me what I’ve done.’

She groaned and, clearly frustrated, began walking again for a few steps.

Matteo watched her, desperate to understand what had upset her. Suddenly she stopped and turned back to him. ‘Matteo,’ she said almost through clenched teeth.

She really was very angry, he realised. He needed to find a way to make things right with her but first he wanted to know what he had done to offend her.

‘The reason I’m…’ She sighed. ‘Hurt? Yes, I am, and definitely embarrassed, is because of what Martha said.’

He relaxed slightly. So it hadn’t been him who had upset her. Still, he thought, Martha was his manager and he needed to find out exactly what had happened so that he could make things right with Casey. ‘Did she insult you?’ he asked anxiously. ‘Because if she did I’m sure she hadn’t meant to.’ Had she? He suspected Martha could be nasty when she wanted her own way. They had fallen out several times and mostly because she had been heavy-handed with her bossiness. ‘Martha likes you. I’m sure she does.’ He stared at her, unable to imagine there being a reason for Martha not to like Casey. ‘And even if she didn’t…’

‘Even if she didn’t?’

Damn, why did he say that? He shook his head.
