Chapter Eighteen

Bell

The more I sat at home, healing and dying at the same time, the more restless I became. I glanced over at the Bible sitting on the edge of my nightstand and grabbed it. My fingertips carelessly parted the book open to a random page, and my eyes landed on Isaiah 29:20.

“For the ruthless will come to an end, and the scorner will be finished. Indeed, all who are intent on doing evil will be cut off.”

“Fuck,” I mumbled and then slammed the book shut.

That was the last thing I needed to read. I had the members of my board handling all my duties while I kept an eye on what was going on in the streets as best as I could. Needless to say, I missed having Lourde around. I picked up my phone to call him when it started vibrating in the palm of my hand.

“This is Furious Belmonte speaking,” I answered.

“Bell, it’s Commissioner Rich Waterson. Glad to hear your voice. I must admit after hearing about your accident, I didn’t think we’d ever speak again, but you’re sounding stronger than ever.”

I let out a soft chuckle and then cleared my throat. “What can I do for you, Rich?”

“I wanted to let you know that the sixty-third precinct arrested one of your guys last night, and he had a lot of your product on him. Now, usually I’d go down, give him a slap on the wrist and then turn a blind eye, but this was too much to look over this time.”

“What are you saying?”

“I’m saying, your boy is going down, and if he snitches, all roads are going to lead right to you.”

“What the fuck do you mean? I keep you mothafuckas on the payroll for a reason, don’t I? Huh?”

“All that is understood, but things have changed, Bell.”

“My money is still green ain’t it?”

“Yeah.”

“And your shit is still brown, so ain’t shit changed. You better make fuckin’ sure any roads, tunnels, or bridges that lead to me get burned,” I growled and ended the call.

I slammed the phone down and wiped my hands down my face. A cold chill swam through my body causing me to shiver. The police were turning on me, and my business deals were starting to fall apart after being intact for over a decade. I pressed the intercom button beside my bed and asked for the maid to have Neenah come to my room as soon as possible. Being that I just couldn’t go out and kill the police commissioner, I had to figure something out and fast, and Neenah was the only person I could trust.

“You okay, Daddy?” she asked as soon as she came into the room.

“Come sit down, baby girl. There’s something I need to talk to you about.”

She walked over and sat on the edge of my bed while staring at me. I could tell she was bracing herself for some bad news.

“What’s going on?” she asked.

“It’s time to move the needle a bit.”

“What?”

“I’m moving
