Thunder startled me awake, and I groaned at the adrenaline coursing through my veins. I sat upright and ran my fingers through my long hair to comb out the knots.

When I glanced at the clock’s glowing numbers, they blinked at precisely midnight, which told me we’d lost power at some point. I couldn’t begin to guess how long I’d been asleep or what time it actually was.

I groped around for my phone in the darkness, my aim made poorer thanks to the alcohol still in me. With so much whiskey in my veins, I’d probably be drunk through tomorrow afternoon, so that didn’t give me a clue as to how long I’d been sleeping.

My seeking fingers found nothing on the end table, and I slowly came to the realization that my phone wasn’t here. I must have left it in the kitchen.

My bladder urgently made its needs known, and I stumbled toward the door. The hallway was dark and silent, and I darted across it to the bathroom and flipped the switch. The light was blinding, and I immediately turned it back off. Once I’d answered nature’s call, I decided to get rid of this whiskey breath. After a thorough tooth brushing followed by mouth wash, I paused out in the hallway again.

My drunken brain decided now was a good time to go apologize. To tell them I was sorry for questioning their motives and telling Demetri I’d rather die than be on a team with a bunch of vampires. Or whatever I’d said that was so stupid.

I put a hand on the hallway wall, guiding my unsteady walk to the kitchen, which I found dark and empty. Nico still slept on the couch, but his eyes were cracked. My heavy footsteps couldn’t have been all that quiet.

“I didn’t mean to wake you,” I loud-whispered with a drunken chuckle.

Nico started, “If you’re here for that orgasmic bite…”

His deep voice hit me straight between the legs as I imagined what it would be like to feel this big, sexy man wrap his powerful arms around me and sink his fangs into my flesh. I shouldn’t be having such inappropriate thoughts about my fellow agent.

“No, no,” I waved him off, but then wondered why. What had I been doing out here, anyway?

That’s right — I wanted to find Hudson and apologize.

“Shift change?” I slurred.

Nico let out a sigh. “Sleep it off, Mel. I’m up last. We got this.”

Hudson and Jax must have already switched. Lightning flashed, showing me the rain hadn’t arrived just yet. Jax must be making the rounds outside, which meant that Hudson had taken the back bedroom.

I headed down the hallway and decided an orgasmic bite sounded good right about now. The only way I’d ever work up the courage to try it with my old flame would be like this — still inebriated.

It was time to see if Hudson and I could both learn to forgive and forget. Especially the forget part. Because there were so, so many things about my past I needed to forget.
